Laying females and appetite....

Mayo Aug 02, 2004 10:11 AM

Do females that are laying stop eating? Our girl has layed/laid once and has more eggs forming. She continues to drink water and lick up the calcium powder but has no interest in food. She has lost some weight due to the energies of forming and laying eggs. Should I worry? Take to the vet?

Matt, females will stop eating for a day or two just before they are going to lay their eggs, but are usually ravenous afterwards and eat like savages! It is not normal for them to completely stop eating, and it's very important that they do eat and get plenty of calcium during egg prodouction. if she is in with the male, perhaps you should remove him or her for awhile. Sometimes the males can pester the females so bad that they stress out. If that doesn't help her appetite, try consulting a vet.

Thank you for the reply. I took her to the vet a few months ago about this eating problem. The vet did an xray and looked her over. He said he couldn't see any problems and bone density was great. But yesterday I noticed in her urine (not eating so feces isn't around) a few long tiny things. I am going to try to get a sample of this to take to the vet. I am actually hoping he finds something internally, so that I feel better actually knowing something is wrong. Are medicine remedies for parasites fairly effective? After a few doses do they get an appetite back after the parasites are destroyed?

Matt, try giving her some baby food squash with an eye dropper by putting a drop on the end of her nose, and squeezing out a little at a time as she laps it. This will help facilitate a stool sample, and get it in to the vet while it is fresh. Depending on the type of parasite and the level of infection, many parasites are treatable if caught in time. It's important to keep her on paper towel, and clean her enclosure & water bowl daily with 10% bleach solution to prevent re-infecting herself.
