Open Sore on RETF

ISH Aug 02, 2004 12:32 PM

When my red eyes were breeding the males kept fighting. One morning after all the night acrobatics I saw one of my nicer males with a big black mark on his right leg. I assumed it was a bruise but now it is a large open black, blue, and red seeping open sore. He seems to be doing fine. But I'm worried about what the sore is and what could be done to heal it. I have neosporin and have been putting that on it but is there anything else. Is it just part of the healing process or is it a fungus that could affect the other frogs? I enclosed a pic so let me know what you think.

Take him to a vet. Great looking frog by the way.

A light coat of neosporin/triple anitibiotic ointment works wonders on open wounds as well.

I would probably do what the second post said...to put some triple antibiotic ointment on and just keep an eye on it. One of my frogs had a horrible nose sore from jumping at the screen...it was about ready to go back into his nasal cavities if it got any worse! But I put triple antibiotic ointment on it twice a day and it healed up really well within a week (also helped that I bought a new cage that isn't so hard on their noses.) I wouldn't think a fungal infection would appear that quickly and in that big of a spot over night...but now that there is an open wound it's obviously susceptable to getting infections so just put the ointment on and it should work. Keep an eye on it. If it does get worse then call or take it into a vet that would know about or at least be able to treat an amphibian. If you would like to see a picture of how badly the sore on my frog's nose was just for comparison, feel free to email me at babybluefrogs4@aol.com. I don't know how to post a picture up yet...

I started using
neosporin (antibiotic pain relief)
the other day but not the triple antibiotic one I'll go and get that one asap. Thanks for the input I was pretty sure my method of treatment was okay. I've just never dealt with a sore this big on one of my red eyes. Just rubbed noses (the neo worked fine then) before I moved them out of a caged top and into a glass one.

You can post pictures at this website. Just go to photo gallery pic your profile and then select to download your picture. If any questions post another message and I'll give you the rundown step by step.

Neosporin should work just fine. We have treated dosens of such wounds with it without a problem. If it does get worse you should take it to a vet though.

Here's the picture of my White's with a nose sore...that's Bentley on top and Cadi on the bottom.

Wow, that doesn't look good. You better get treating it.

This is after I've used medicine..there's still a little bit of a sore there, but it's not as open and indented, and not nearly as red. It was healed up a little better before but I think he's been doing some extra rubbing when he eats...so I'm putting the medicine back on. Yes...antibiotics are a wonder!!!
