I was so in awe I just had to share this.
I cleaned all of my baby tanks yesterday. I am still keeping everyone on paper towels instead of peat or core fiber. I moved some of the larger clutches to larger tanks to give them a little more space. When I finished the last tank I looked at the largest tank with 19 babies that are about 1 month old. Next to the water dish one was laying limp and lifeless.
I noticed that there was a lot of water and goo running out of its mouth. He was nice and plump even through his legs and he was still a beautiful green and rust color so I decided to try to resuscitate him.
I really didn’t have a clue what to do for such a tiny little creature so I just opened his mouth and allowed the water to run out. I then turned him over in my hand and stroked his chest and belly very gently from throat to tail. I saw a bit of a twitch in one front leg and then it gulped. He was still very limp with eyes closed and looked like he was going to die. I continued to stroke a while longer. After more water spit up and he gulped a couple more times I decided his fate wasn't in my hands. Just in case he could survive I put him in the warm vive that houses the tubs of roaches so that he could warm up. By bedtime, about an hour later, he was holding his head up and breathing very hard. His little chest looked like some sort of pump.
This morning, I am happy to report that he was sitting in the tiny water dish I had in the small tub he was in overnight and his breathing looked very normal. He was quite spunky when I moved him to the tank with his siblings.
I really believe he would have died if I had left him where I had found him. I just can't believe that he made it! I am guessing that the cold fresh water I had used in the dish slowed him down and he probably took in water while trying to get out of the water. I now have a UTH under their tank where the water dish is to keep the water a little warmer.
