How do I ship a lizard???

msubigdawg Aug 02, 2004 12:58 PM

I am wanting to find someone to take my white lined gecko for free. But I am probably going to have to ship him. I was wondering if yall could tell me how to go about shipping him.

I've never shipped an animal, but I believe the idea is to place them into a deli cup, an insulated box and provide a heat pack or a cold pack

This link should provide all the information you would need.

If you don't mind me asking? Why are you getting rid of the little guy, he looks very healthy? And have you tried any local ways? I live in Jacksonville, FL and people list animals and such on a free classified section where I work. Plus some petsmarts will let you post pets you are giving away or sometimes even selling on a bulletin board.

You will notice they insulate the box. You can pick this stuff up cheap or use (or buy) an old cheap styrofoam cooler. As for shipping, everyone has their personal favorite but so far UPS has done a good job on overnight AM delivery. Make sure you write on the outside of the box BIG ARROWS pointing up and "Harmless Live Animal" (I recommend avoiding the word Lizard as some people don't care and avoid the word Reptile as some are hostile or freaked out by it... ignorance can not always be avoided. It is best to confuse ignorant people with the simplistic word "Animal" as that just keeps them guessing).

Good Luck,
Mike Frericks
