This was a first for me...reabsorbed eggs

bluerosy Aug 02, 2004 05:04 PM

Terry D was right...

I opened the cage to my gravid Peanut Butter brooksi female to see her chowing down on the last three eggs. I quickly removed them from her mouth but the teeth already did damage to two of them. That leaves me with one good egg. So I palpitated her to see if the rest were in there. Sure enough I could feel the egss in her stomach.

I was very upset. I went into the house to vent to my wife.
Then I made the discision to palpitate the eggs right out of her stomach...much like palpitating an eggbound snake except the opposite way. They had only been in there for 5 minutes. It worked but all the eggs have slits from her teeth and most of the egg yolk ran out. I put them in a hatch box but I am sure they will not make it.

So how was your day?

What an awful scene. I've never heard of this before. And it's amazing that you were able to retrieve any of the eggs at all. What would cause her to do such a thing? Definitely a bummer. So sorry.

I had this happen with two snakes this season as well. One was a high white CA King which ate them all before I had gotten to them. I have always assumed this happened at times with infertile eggs until I found one of my female hognose chowing down some eggs. I saved two fertile from that munch that are now little cannibal replicas of their mother.

I have had this happen a time or two in the past as well with hognose but not aware if with any other kings.

Rainer that does suck. I'm beginning to wonder if my flame female is eggbound or if she just did the same thing. She's been in and out of the nest box for the last few days, but she's way past due.

Rich, I've had hogs do the same thing. When I bred them years ago, I caught several females eating eggs as soon as they laid them.......not waiting until they were all laid, but right out of the hind end. Makes you wonder how many make it in the wild.

I've had mole kings do the same thing and concur it doesn't just happen with infertile eggs. It would be nice to know what triggers this.

That's a bad day Rainer. I thought by the title you meant reabsorbed (or is it resorbed?) them.. Not ATE them. A friend had a Brook's do it last year and a hondo. So far, I have had only a few reabsorb them, but none to my knowledge, ate them. One particular gray band I have has developed eggs, gained lots of girth and then never laid for 2 yrs. previous to this. This year though, she finally did lay 8 good eggs,so I guess I'll keep her.
Sorry to hear of your problems. I am at 25% or less production this year. Maybe we could get together in Daytona and cry in our drinks together.

Mark, It would be nice to meet up with everybody from this forum at the Adams Mark and get a table. How do you suggest we find everybody? NocturnalTom said he would but me dinner...(little does he know the hotel buffet is $25 bucks a plate, LOL) so I am not letting him out of my sight. But how do we recognize each other if we only know what are screen names are?
Mark , maybe you can be our official "evening coordinator". You get everybody to your table #393 (since you won't have anything better to do. LOL!) and arrange our entertainment for the night (BTW, I like mine petite and trailer park trashy, okay!)...

Seriously this has been a problem every year. Nobody thinks about coordinating anything until after the show when its to late. The set up ends 5pm (?) so I guess we meet at 6pm at the inside bar or by the outside bar??? The outsiade bar has hamburgers and beer so we won't go hungry. They also have an icebreaker inside on friday but thats to crowded. But it would be a good place to meet after the set up on friday. Then on sat the show ends at 5-6pm and say we meet at 6:30 pm for dinner OR 8pm at the outside bar and band area?

I have a headache.

Mark, wattya say? Everybody chacks in at your table to see whats up for the evening??

table #393. Com'n everybody repeat after me.. TABLE #393

richh Aug 03, 2004 07:02 AM

do not have tables at this show.

table #393. Com'n everybody repeat after me.. TABLE #393

Not everyone goes there to sell. More show up to buy. Be hard to meet at a table when you can not get in.

Back bar on the deck is typically how people do it unless they set up a lunch time to meet. Put the time out there and see who shows up. I have typically met many thru these forums by just hitting the back bar at 8pm. Whomever shows, shows. Many show, some will not. So many smaller room parties and separate groups develop at this show that it becomes VERY difficult to stay in one place for to long. You'll be invited to join several other groups before you know it..

Sherman, you still following these threads and getting all this down or will we run into you at another party LOL....

Best Regards, Rich Hebron

Rich,

I can guarantee Howie will be on the deck after setup. lol. If you want to meet up, I'll be the tall skinny guy with shoulder length black hair, side burns, and a blonde hangin on my arm. I'm also at the same hotel as Rainer, but I don't have a table......just going for the fun times to be had. I can't wait to finally meet some of the people here.

Brandon, never happen, your describing half the people on deck toward darkness.

Stevens has a pic of my wife and I. I won't be hard to find. Typically seated in front of the back bar adjacent to the stage. Almost a regular thing now for that Friday night.

Easy to reach as well at 904-233-1973. Ring it and I'll look up to see where you are since I'm only 5'10" at 220lbs. Typically had a blonde on my arm a while back but then we married. Now she only occasionally sneers at me, hahahah.

state until all the eggs were layed. Is this not correct? Did she lay them all and then eat them? Or could that be the problem ... for some reason the female is completely aware and awake when depositing her eggs? Why would a female do this?

bluerosy Aug 02, 2004 10:01 PM

I have no clue why they do this. I normally pull the eggs out one by one as a female deposits them, so that is why I have not witnessed this first hand. Today I was gone for a spell and when I came back I opened the sterlite to see this happening.

The really dumb thing is she did not want any mice I offered to her two hours later.
