Leopard Gecko too skinny??? pic inside

tonebone Aug 02, 2004 09:07 PM

I have had him since february. He was a gift for my friends brother, he took one look at him and said he was too skinny and probably unhealthy. My friend had no idea what to do with him so I took him. For the first couple months he would not eat much at all.
He is currently one cricket every 1-2 days. is it common for them to be this skinny? . He is very active at night. also he still seems very scared when I walk past his tank, but when handling he is very calm.

No that's not normal.

you're lucky that it at least eats
Try a variety of insects liek mealworms/silkworms and crickets. Most importantly get a fecal done. Which is where you take a stool sample to a vet to determine if it has parasites.

Please take it to a vet in the mean time make sure it gets lots of water and make sure the temps are high enough

Good luck

Thanks, I appreciate it. I now wish I had asked sooner. Someone at a local pet store told me he was alright. I will get him to a vet soon he is part of the family. Also can high temperatures creat this problem?

High temps wouldn't do that. Hopefully the vet can fix you up and you can post some after pics.

What should I expect to pay for this service? Just don't want to be shocked when I get the bill.

#1 - I've heard $20-50, depending on your area. Go to anapsid.org to find a local reptilian vet... or look in the phone book for vets that deal in "Exotic animals."

#2 - I'm having a Psychic moment. I'll bet that the pet store who told you the leo was just fine was either a Petsmart or a Petco, right?? NEVER ask them. Period. It is very seldom that the employees actually know what they're talking about when it comes to leos, sad as it may seem!

#3 - your leo is NOT healthy at all. If you need any advice, just ask, but the vet SHOULD be able to help. He/She might also prescribe some meds.

You think he is big enough for a pinky??? Like I said I wish I would have asked for help a while back, since he has looked like this since I got him last february. He is going to the vet tommorrow.
