New lizard for a semi-advanced herper...

LizardLuva Aug 02, 2004 09:45 PM

in a few years i will be able to get a lizard. (Soon i will be getting a ball python...)

but my parents oked it. and here are the requirements, there pretty simple, i just want to now what you guys think...

ok number one:

diet, doesnt matter, prefer rodent or insect

Housing: Nothing larger than a 40 Gallon Breeder...(preferably smaller) But this is VERY flexible, if the lizard's maturity is slower and i could keep it in smaller tanks than a larger one, this is more possible for a larger tank... ( i may build a cage instead...)

Not too high matience, i want a fairly hardy herp

(at an expo) Under 100$ for the lizard itself, (preferably under 50$, but if the lizard is a hard to find specimen, or if its high quality herp, i may pay over 100$

I plan to handle this lizard, at least very gently, but a bonus is a lizard that i can touch, pet, take out of cage, let him explore a safe room, chill out with...etc,
General lizard interests

Lizard: Rank: (1-10, 1 being low, 10 being high)

BT Skinks 6

Hello:
From the list you have the Water Dragon, Bearded Dragon and the Savannah Monitor would be the three best counting all the criteria you show. Beardeds would probably be the best though I prefer the Water Dragons myself. The problem with a Savannah Monitor is that it has the potential to grow to 4" in length. I have seen and raised them to nearly that size.
Another animal you may want to think about is a Sudan Plated Lizard. They are nice omnivores which live quite a long time and are very hardy. They will also tolerate some handling and grow to nearly 2'. Good Luck!!!

Savannahs need larger than a 40 gal! Get a Blue tongue skink!!!

Note: I am very flexible on housing requirements, due to the fact i have a few years to save money or build the cage.

Hello Everyone:
I agree, that is a phenomonal picture of a Blue-Tongue (or any animal for that matter).
Sorry for the error. Savannahs grow to over 4'. Definitely too large for your tank.
Have a Great Day!!!

My other hobby is photography and I spend a lot of time on a digital photography forum. So, I have to ask, what camera did you use? Your shots are as good as the ones posted by some real experienced people.

Hahahaha thanks but I stink at photography and I used a cheap-o digicam that I just got. Fuji Finepix A330 I believe.

Well if that's 'Stinks', then I want to stink too. :]
