"Blue phase" veiled cham??

Jmorgan Aug 02, 2004 10:02 PM

Ok, whats the deal with these? anyone have pics of adults?

I LOVE the blue look to panthers, however.. this being my first chameleon, which I feel very confident I can raise, I simply cannot justify spending that much money for a chameleon, not my first. Its not that I cant' afford to maintain him or take care of him, I just cannot justify that much for the chameleon.

However, I've seen these blue phase chams for sale, usually around 30-40 for a baby, plus shipping. Now thats more then most veiled babies, but if they are blue/turquoise it be well worth it to me, so does anyone know what they are and have pics of adults?

Thanks!!! also if anyoen know of a way to get a panther "cheap"not trying to sound cheap..) then i'd be very interested.. I just can't spend that much on the chameleon itself..

Thanks,

Jacob

This is a male Blue Phase at about a year old. The blue did not show up as well in the pic as it does face to face, but I think you can get an idea.

Hope that helps,

Tammy

thank you, did you purchase him online? if so could you point me in the direction?

I was originally lookin at buying "ringo" from Reptimax, however if i can get a chameleon with "blue" in his coloring i'd much rather pay a few bux more for that. wish nosey Be were not so dang expensive, but i can understand why they are gorgeous.

I got him at a reptile show from Ben Siegel. His site is http://www.albinonile.com I have bought 2 chameleons from him and have been VERY happy with them. Their first clutch of eggs is due to hatch this fall

Thanks,

I was lookin on this site

http://www.ragingreptiles.us/vchameleon.htm

at the blue phased, but im concerned bout the size of the chams, im guessin prolly small (4" or so?).. my main concern with getting a younger is how large my enclosure is.. 2'x2'x4' and i was planning on having a big ficus and pothos in it, which i hear isnt' always good for youngins?

Mine were babies when I got them, but I did not have to have them shipped. I kept them both in a 4' tall round screen cage for awhile. The female was eating all the food and growing alot faster than the male, so I switched him out to a hommade screen cage that was 17"x16"x32" and I never had any problems. You can check out my pics at www.dossjr.com/chameleons.htm I have pics at most stages, including thir first day home. Where are you from? Is there a show near you? If so, look for a known name like Ben or some others. I have had great luck with mine and have learned alot along the way.

awsome, did you feed em crickets in the start? of flys?

ETDoss Aug 02, 2004 11:33 PM

I started off with small crickets and experimented along the way. My female is such a pig she would even eat a small pinky mouse once she grew up. Since I don't use chemical pesticides, I'd throw them a few moths every once in awhile... they loved that. The main thing is to do your research and try new things... just don't try fireflies... they are toxic.

ya i've read bout fire flys..

My local pet shop only offers crickets, 2 sizes. large and small.. and thats it.. another reason i was worried about a baby if i had to order flys for it..

hmm decisions..i finished my cage today, all i have left to do is repot the plants and arrange things.. and im good to go.. so now im just deciding where and what to get.

Did you cup feed your baby? or just let them loose? I figure if i use the large ficus i'll have to cup/hand feed.. since its soo dense..however I have a much smaller (not much foliage at all) hibiscus i could use instead for a babe..

ahh i dunno i think im over stressing.. i just want it to all go well.

I completely understand. I have always free fed. Feel free to e-mail me at Reptiles@nc.rr.com... I hate to take up too much space on the board.

Funny how things cycle back around. This looks more like the "original" veiled coloration from wc stock. Odd to hear it described as a color phase. When I got my first one back in 1996 it was a beautiful turquoise blue, huge yellow side bars edged in black, and he was over 18" TL. Even had a nice temperment. Not that common to see one like him nowadays.

I have to agree with you. I have a veiled that is really BLUE. The one in the photo should probably be called a "Sunburst". I'll try to post a pik of my blue fellow once I've figured out how to take it from a file & move it to the forum posts.
And I must say that I've seen websites advertising Kryptonite Bright. What a joke! I can make every one of my males Kryptonite bright simply by placing him by a female or a mirror. And that's not adding a litle photo enhancing to finish the job.
Stating this, I realize that the truth being said probably got some people teed off. But the truth is the truth.

I don't have anything against this breeder or this nice cham. He's gorgeous! I just thought it was interesting to see what once was considered a "normal" animal labeled as a morph. If you like his coloration that's what is most important...the label means very little unless you are trying to produce a particular trait and want to breeed for it. I also find that once I get to know a cham well through all its moods they seem much more beautiful. You get to see all the subtle nuances in color change and pattern from day to day.
