require IMMEDIATE assistance.......hind-leg paralysis

irismybeardie Aug 02, 2004 10:16 PM

okay i kepe my dragon on "desert blend lizard litter" and it looks like shes got impaction? i came home tonight with crickets and she usually freaks out, but today she say there, and i noticed she didnt wanna move.....

so i pick her up, and her rear legs are swollen, seem "glazed" (maybe a condition of being swollen?), and i noticed the one leg was bleeding a tiny bit, and they are paralyzed....im letting her soak in warm water, hoping she'll pass it....any tips? anything i can do?

i noticed her activity went down a day or so ago, but thought nothing of it because of how hot it was in my room, figuring she was tired from the heat or something. i just came back from a camping trip and my little girl is definately sick and paralyzed!

well, she just pooped this second, and is looking quite satisfied with that bearded dragon "yeah, so?" look. anything else i should do?

...if you havent already done so. i would suggest shelf liner until you know she's ok.

may sure she's well hydrated by dropping water on her nose and letting her drink. and go easy on the food for a day or so until she seems back to normal - if you notice any other complications get to a vet ASAP.

not sure about the bleeding though.....

yes thanks, i dont know why her knee was bleeding (not currently, but had dried blood on it. she is housed with another female, maybe the other female is kickin her "behind" since Iris is not "top dog" in the cage anymore.

but anyways, will the swelling and hind-leg paralysis slowly go away or do i have a permanently disabled beardie?

If it's going away, it will most likely recover. It may be that the other dragon picked up on her being disabled with the blockage and tried to take advantage of the situation.
I have noticed that once a dragon within a group gets nipped, it becomes a target for other nips. Kind of like an injured pack animal (wolf, or lion). They may just pick off the weaker ones. Survival of the fittest type thing.

So yes, take them off the walnut stuff & I would even separate the two until all is well. (if possible)

Good luck.

the link below has some methods that have worked to move them out and recover leg mobility.

If she is handicapped, the other dragon may victimize her more or go at the injured area

I don't know what to think, other than I don't think it was compaction. That wouldn't cause the legs to bleed. It most likely was injured some how.
Unless the swelling was so bad, it split open? Or if it was dragging around & rubbed raw, but I don't think that would happen in one day.

I would take it to a Vet.

Good luck & keep us updated.
