WTF eating amounts

Michaels_Angel Aug 02, 2004 11:36 PM

Hi guys!
Well, I have had years of experience with american green tree frogs, and have just recently (2 weeks last thursday) adopted 2 white's tree frogs. Now that they have adjusted to their new home, i can't seem to feed them enough. I am currently feeding them every other day (about 12-18 crickets). But they have gotten to where they eat those very quickly, and sit looking for more. I even fed them a "snack" of 6 crickets on their off day because I thought they were wanting food. Sure enough they ate those without hesitiation. basically, I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how much I should feed them? And how often? Since this is my first journey with this type of forg anything else anyone would like to share with me on caring for and interesting facts is also greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Jess

Whites will eat at almost any opportunity given! So as owners it is our duty to make sure they don't over eat. Are you feeding them large or small crickets? If you're feeding them 12-18 crickets a piece every other day, they're on their way to become obese very very quickly. I feed my White's about 3-4 crickets a piece every three to four days. I've just started hand feeding them though to keep that routine. Before I would take them out of their enclosure and put them in a cage with crickets...but I often times lost count and now one of my frogs is quite the little fatty, and one other is well on his way to being so...I use tweezers to grab the back end of the cricket and just dangle it in front of their face. So you definitely might want to consider reducing how many crickets you're giving them and how often you do it. If they eat smaller ones though, 12-18 a piece could easily add up to the 3-4.

I feed the adults roughly 4-6 crickets every other day.

Hi!
Thanks for the replies!
I have been feeding mine about 6 4-week soft shells every other day. They don't seem to be getting very fat (nothing like the pictures in books), so i guess that the amount is okay?
Thanks again!

As long as you've found an amount and a space between feedings that's been keeping them at a steady weight..feel free to continue doing so! I'm including a picture of my definitely obese frog who is getting her food portions cut back to about half of what they should be during feedings now. Although she's cute...she can't get any bigger or she won't be able to move!
