prolapse?

vicks_and_bubbs Aug 03, 2004 03:27 AM

Hi,

Two of our first clutch have left the egg, and one of them seems to have some kind of prolapse, (looks like hemipenis) it seems lively enough, we were wondering if it is likely to survive and if there's anything we can do at all in the meantime to help?

Also, the other eggs are showing no signs of getting ready to hatch yet. Do you often get one or two early ones, or will it be something to do with the the temperature variations in the tank (on a heatmat and those two were at the bottom)

Thanks in advance

On closer inspection, it looks like a fine blood vessel protruding from under the anal scale.....kind of like an umbilical cord.......any ideas anyone?

thanks

It could still be taking in the yolk. If its coming from the anal plate Im not sure though. Try putting it in a small container with a moist paper towel. The other eggs should start hatching within a day or so of the first ones. Good luck.

So now I've calmed down after the excitement of them hatching and had ANOTHER look. It's not coming from the vent, it's higher up.it definately looks like an umbilical cord, but I didn't know that snakes had them. It's quite dry and shrivelled, and the little beggar is very lively!!!

Keep him on a moist paper towel. Ive never had any experince with this but its supposed to slowly be absorbed. But, since its dry Im not sure if it will or not. Hopefully someone else will have some more helpful info for you. Good luck.

Had a similar problem with a hatchling Nelsoni Milksnake. As the previous post stated, keep it on a moist (not dripping wet)paper towel in its box. Don't worry if it crawls under the towel - the towel is like a hide. The attched piece is part of the cord/yolk sac. By keeing it moist, it is less likely to damage the entry point when it eventually comes off. He is possibly very active in trying to get it to fall off! Don't help it at all as they are still very fragile. Give it help by keeping it moist and let nature takes it course. Once it falls off, check the area where it was attached.

The Milksnake I noted above had a black 'belly button' (yeah, sounds funny but that is the best way to describe it...) that after two sucessive sheds, cleared up and now - 8 months latter is completely gone. If it is still there after the first shed, upon going into blue stage for the next shed (and sucessive sheds ater that if a mark is still there), put it back on a moist paper towel. That helps the site diminsh and form normal scales.

Good Luck....

Of course, that's easier said than done, if you've never seen an umbilical cord on a hatchling. I hadn't either (and also panicked!), until about three weeks ago, when I had my first baby corn ever to hatch out dragging a 1-1/2" cord behind him. Then, a week later, I had another one who had about a 1/4" stump. As everyone has advised on this thread, I did keep both babies on damp paper towels (you don't want to put anything dry or rough in there that the cord could snag/catch on -- the baby could keep pulling and eviscerate himself). Both of mine lost their cords/stumps in a few days and are perfectly normal looking now. I would imagine that yours will be the same way in a few days.

>>it will be gone in another day or so.
it is the remnants of the egg sack.
