I recently got a 3 foot dumerils and im housing it in a 36x18 enclosure do you think it will require a bigger cage in the future?
I keep my '02 male Dumeril's in a 48x18 enclosure. This winter he will be moved over to a 6ft, or possibly 8 ft enclosure. At 2 years he is nearly 5ft long, and very heavy bodied.
You take a snake that big, add a hide to the cage, a water bowl, and you dont have a whole lot of room left.
You wont be using a 36" enclosure all it's life. The minimum would be 4ft,bigger being even better.
My male is quite active, and given the room he has, he is usually stretched out, rather than coiled. And once the lights go out. He talks his nightly "walks around the cage.
He/she isn't going to stay three feet for long. Adults can range from 8-10 feet so depending on the rule of thumb you use, you'll need 16-24 square feet of living space. Everything I've read says they're not really climbers so you don't need much vertical space. I'm just finishing building a 6' wide by 3' deep by 2' tall cage for my two year old and I hope he'll be happy in it.
Good luck!!
Something like this enclosure is optimal (if slightly undersized) for 1.1 dumeril's. Individual units measure 5.5'long x 2' deep x 2' high.
