Going out of town for 3 days, need advice...

psylynt Aug 03, 2004 08:53 AM

I'm going out of town for 3 days soon & I live in Dallas & don't really have any one that can stop by & mist the aquarium for me while I'm gone (just moved here).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the humidity up while I'm gone. Would it be worth it to get an automatic mister/humidifier?? Is there a cheaper way?

Also, should I just put 3 times my serving amount for my t-rex crested powder & large # of crickets in the aquarium? Any help is appreciated. Thankyou.
~Ben

Huhm. Well, call around Dallas at the local shops. They will have petshops there that will take care of your reptiles while you are away, I am more than sure of that and for relatively cheap. They have two places in Lafayette, LA (not that big of a town) that does this for a nominal fee, but is great when you go on those 1-2 week business/vacation trips. That is all that I can suggest. If this is done, you have to consider the possibilites of what may happen over there to the gecko (excessive handling, contageous diseases, etc), so I would suggest you go to a place that is reputable and you feel comfortable with. Be nonchalant about it. Walk into a store and speak with the guys that work there or talk to a manager and see how familiar they are with different herps. Also, look at the pets that they have in there. This is a good indicator of how well they look after their animals. This is just my suggestion. You can keep extra food in there (might dry up) or extra crickets in there (might chew up stuff, incl. geckos). Three days is three days. Cresteds get alot of there water through the food that they eat, but still, this does not mean that they will get enough water. I would gladly take care of them if you lived a little closer, but since you are so far away, I am unable to help out. Hope this helps...let me know.

You could try a dripper for the water and put a small bowl under it. They sell them in most pet stores. It is just a bowl with a screw in the side that you loosen to create a drip. Heck you could make one. They come in log shaped units too, I think by ZooMed? Your Cresty will be fine for three days even without water. Just feed and water him/her well before you leave and it will be fine for 3 days. The other thing you might think about is coco fiber for a substrate and soak it really good before you leave. This would assist with humidity if it is a major concern? I wuoldn't think it will be a major problem for three days though. Best of luck, enjoy your trip!

You did not list species, but I will assume Rhacs. I tend to feed more heavily prior, make sure that the water dish is full and put a bottle cap of fruit in the day I leave. Otherwise they will be just ducky when you get back. Actually most all gex will do fine with a 3 day fasting.

Well, my girlfriend will have to stay in town for her job on the weekend I'm flying out to my friends wedding... so she can take care of them while I'm gone.

Thanks for the offer Ian, maybe another time. Had another question too... Both my cresteds were bought from the same dealer & I believe are siblings. They're still juvenilles. They're a little over 3" long (total length) ea. Not sure if they're male of female. Was hoping to find someone in the Dallas area who might be willing to trade a crested for one of mine when they get old enough to tell the sex, especially if they're both male/male or female/female, or possibly even if they are male/female just to prevent inbreeding.

I believe mine are chocolate harlequins (from pics I've seen). Will be getting the "big" rhacodactylus book in the mail today or tomorrow, should know for sure then.

Thanks again for you help. If you ever need someone to watch your little buddies while your gone, let me know..

P.S. I live in the Carrollton area.

As far as trading goes, I would, but I only have a m/f pair, but I have a ton of other animals (monitors, etc).
If you ever need someone to watch your animals, feel free to contact me. Enjoy the book, its great.

Hi
I'm new to this forum and i was just wondering is the book you guys are referring to is the "Crested geckos in captivity" book that ive seen advertised with a red crested G on the cover? Also i'm waiting on two crested gex that i bought, one olive and one red/brown (ren and stimpy). I bought a six foot tall glass display case thats a foot wide and am going to convert it before i collect the gex. one devils ivy plant in there with some bamboo, a red light for night time, and a fan on top to circulate air. ill make some hides as well, like toilet roll insides painted and stuck around the plant and one good one on the bottom to keep moist. How does this sound?

Make sure you take some pictures. I would like to see before and after photos. If you don't have a digital camera, they sell the digital-like cameras at walgreens and walmart and process them on a disc for relatively cheap.

Really sounds like a fun park for Geckos!!! They will love alll that room.

First, the book is called:
Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care
by Philippe de Vosjoli, Frank East, and Allen Repashy
Just google it, you shouldn't have any problems.
As for the cage size, as they get bigger, you might want to try something a little wider. Mine like to jump around, and that might not provide the mobility they need. I don't know, just see how it works. I have an aquarium for two which is like a double tall 20 gallon long (40 gallons?) which is perfect, and sold for $20. As for devil's ivy, i have never heard of it. You might want to consider plants like pothos, which are known to be gecko-safe. I have heard rumors that bamboo is actually toxic as well, so be carefull. Regarding the tp tubes, I would suggest getting onto a site like blackjungle.com for cork rounds, which may last longer (also, they have a bunch of other great plants and supplies much cheaper than most retail stores). I hope this helps. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
