all screen cage?

dmlove Jun 23, 2003 10:52 AM

Ive seen some posts that are saying that ppl dont like these, and most build screen and plexi glass cages...should i change mine to that? i just build 2 really big all screen cages, and there is only one 'cool spot on the really far end from the basking spot that is like 73 degrees, where everything else is 82 and up,...is this ok or should i but another heat lamp on top of this? the tihng is i have like 5 lamps on his cage: 3 basking spot lamps (ESU Tight beam and 2 reg 100 watt light bulb) and 1 powersun lightbulb and then 1 18 inch floursecent reptisun 5.0...shouldi add another? the only time he goes to the 'cool' spot wit his cave is right after basking, and soemtimes he catches a nap (i geuss the coolness of it makes him tired?) but then he goes and basks again....ist his ok>?

also another question...i have a 14 inch female (not yet readyt o breed) that is in sight of my male...and occasionally Ralph (the male) starts trying to get out of his cage to get to her, andits funny cuz the female, small as she may look, tries to get to HIM, climbing on the sides of her cage and arm waving like crazy, and walks around with her tail slightly lifted like in heat (LOL)...im not gonna let her get with my male until she is a yr and a half, (in about 8 months)....sooo yeah...oh well i just thought it was funny...

Wow Dave, that's a hell of a lot of lights for one cage. I would just use the Powersun bulb, and another 150 watt basking light for over the basking spot, and maybe the flourescnt over the other half of the cage. Whatever gets that basking spot to a 105-110 temp. The rest of the cage can go down gradually the farther it gets from the basking lights. The only problem you might have is in the winter when the house temps go down below 70 or so. Then I would add a low watt household buld on the cool side to get the temp up to 75 or so. If you find it hard too get the temps they require then yes I would go ahead and put some plexi glass on the back, and sides.

As for the little female. Yeah there always big and tuff in the safty of their cage. That male would jump on her back and bite her neck, and she would run off with her tail between her legs.lol
