New UV Bulbs I bought, our opinions on them and customer service

CheriS Aug 03, 2004 03:15 PM

This light is made by Westron, the same company that made the original UV Heat lights that we liked so well, but had a lot of trouble getting delivery from the company that sold them. Now they are being handled by and some designed with a company called Mac Industries using the name ReptileUV. The man that owns this company has been testing lights for years and works with a UVB testing group online and also has good prices on the Solarmeter UV meters.

We recently got some of the new MegaRay lights and their new heat emitter called MegaHeat. The heat emitter is like nothing I have ever seen and at 60 Watts, is putting out as much heat as our old 160Watt ceramics so it can be farther away from the animals. A picture of it below, it looks like a light bulb, but is covered in protective screen and is much safer for reptiles.

With the MegaRay 100 Watt Flood UVB light, @ 15 inches from basking area we are getting a great UVB output (better than any I have ever seen) and a perfect 105-110 basking temp area on the surface. The 60 Watt external ballast UVB light we have one the smaller tanks and using the MegaHeat Emitter on it, the babies seem to like them well and it still keeps a cooler area on the far side of the tank for them, which was hard to do in smaller tanks with the MV. Plus we can still keep heat on them at night from overhead but with it dark.

The lights are suppose to more durable than the UVB all in one bulbs we have used in the past, I will let everyone know how they last, but right now I am pretty impressed with the UVB output and the perfect heat gradient with having it so far from the dragons.

They have several types of UVB lights and you can read the info on them at the makers site and also how to order from the new company.

Some pics to see the lights and the new engineering of the Heat Emitter

I have quit buying the other merc. Vap's. They just weren't lasting. The first batch lasted for a year, in fact, over a year but I replaced them. The other brands seemed to change style ever couple months & none of the newer ones lasted more than a couple months. Hopefully these new ones you found will work out.

We as a community need a reliable UVB source! Our Dragons need them. lol

Thank you for sharing.

1. Do not touch them with your hands, the oil from hands can make a hot spot and cause them to burn out.... if you accidently touch them with your hands or any skin, shut them off and when cool, clean with a dry soft towel.

2. Do not put them at an angle while in use if they are self ballast.

3. Add a surge protector if you have power surges, we did not think we were having them, the power company said no or very minimal one and when we added protectors with software that runs through the computer, we found we were having several strong ones a day and many small ones...that is really rough on the lights.

Hey Cheri, what kind of readings are you getting off of this one at say 12"? Westrons claims for the amount of UVB that some of their bulbs produce seems outrageous and i've always kind of wondered if they were enbellished a bit.

So I am pretty happy with that in a 100 watt, and that is after a 48 hour burn off period.

That's over the basking area, 18 inches out there is not much reading so the dragons can retire to the cooler area and lessen in UVB too. These new bulbs give the concentration of a spot but the safety of a flood

Most our experience is with the self ballast ones, but I have a few external ballast and I have just set those up also, as that seems the way to go in the future with many owners reporting a much better lifetime on the lights. Once you have the set up, you only have to replace the bulb when they burn out or the UVB output drops.
