Siamese Twins

Serpents Den Aug 03, 2004 04:55 PM

This was a clutch of 8 eggs 50% het for Pied which one egg contained siamese twins that went full term and died in the egg.

The markings are not the same~ cool! Can you show us a better pic of the dorsal side?

They have to be maternal twins because they came from the same egg~ but maternal twins are usually identical (I thought~ but I'm also thinking mammals~ I *think*)~ so are they paternal twins and somehow two sperms fertilized one egg? Is that even possible?

I'm confused.

Well, I guess it's proof that some of the pattern is either random or affected by the environment. They had cloned a cat a few years back and it had a completely different pattern (same colors, just spread around differently) as the original. The coloration is generally the same. Interesting...

Yes, they should be genetically identical.

because the animal was not fully developed. I've seen it many of times now, and it is because the animal is not fully developed. Everybody here seems to get upset about it, but hatch a healthy vigorous animal with these colors & pattern that lives more than a couple of days, and I might just change my mind.

No offense to anybody, but I have seen three animals on here this year that were praised for their color/pattern, but none lived more than a couple of days (THEY ARE NOT FULLY DEVELOPED!!!). I have seen it before, and these animals are just not developed properly. Anybody disagree???

I wasn't praising the color/pattern. I was commenting on why the patterns would not be exactly the same in two genetically identical snakes... Did I miss something?

I will post more pics tomorrow, it's time for me to go home now
As for two different sperms being involved, she was only bred to one 100% Het. Pied.

Yes, thats what I meant~ 2 sperms (from the same male if she was only bred to the one male)~ but I didn't think that was possible. It *Shouldn't* be possible right?

If they come from the same egg...then they are identical...it has been shown that tempertaure variations can change the pattern of a snake...so just becuase they do not look alike does not mean they are genetically identical. It is a chemical impossibility for more than 1 sperm to enter 1 egg.

It is probably best that they didn't make it......it would have been a rough life.

I always feel bad for the siamese/conjoined twins when I see them... even if they do make it... very rough life... how would you feed them? Etc, etc etc...

My opinion... probably best that they did not make it... would have been a miserable life for them ...
