dumerils growth rate

lb0666 Aug 03, 2004 05:11 PM

I saw a post where someone said there 02 dumerils male was nearly 5 feet long as where mine is also an 02 but a female and barely 3 feet if that. Is there something wrong my snake or could it be a possible dwarf?

Even though growth rates can vary based on feeding and mean temperatures or genetics, your Dumerils is showing normal growth. While a 5ft 02' is obviously overfed and kept at too high a temperature. This kind of growth will most definately have detrimental effects on that boa's long term health. I have a buddy that has kept boas for several years and had bought a pair from me in 2000. He kept them just as any other BCI, 85-90 daytime temp and fed them 2x's in a 10 day period, I was blown away when he brought in his 3 foot yearling Dumerils boas... they looked pretty good, ie. normal symetry, not overly fat, other than their extreme size for their age. 6 months later they dropped over dead within a month of each other. Now, their may have been other care related issues that caused their demise, but it was a sign of a underlying problem- improper husbandry for the breed. Others here may have better infor in regaurds to this issue or dwarf morphs, which I do not keep.
Thanks and good luck-

My female is a Oct 02 and she is not yet 40 inches. I keep her on the cool side...67 at night and mid 80's during the day. Since they are from a semi-arid region I suspect night time temps drop quite a bit from day time highs. I feed her maybe every couple of weeks on small rats and so far she seems to be just fine.

I have 3, 2 year old Dumerils. The smallest one is around 32", he's one I just bought. The largest is around 40", got him from a great customer(Mike T).. I know feeds his snakes very well. And a girl from my own crew that is around 36". She's pictured below. I've fed her moderately, every 10 days on average.

A medium rat, actually(previous picture). Picture: Side by side with the 4 ft'r. The tubs were only used so I could get both of them in the shot- NOT FULL TIME ACCOMADATIONS. They are currently housed in 36x16x8 sweater boxes.

The pics were taken after a trip from Great Falls to Missoula.. a 3 hour ride across the continental divide... 6 round trip. I wanted to show them to a BCI breeder, Dan Ebby, in G Falls. The bowls were a feeble attempt to provide water for the trip.. of course they spilled along the way. Thanks for you concern fellas.

67 is way to low 75 is more like it. Alot of people want to go by the air temps they find online from Madagascar. if these were gtp or something exposed to the air like that I would agree. these guys will spend alot of time under ground or in rocks or decomposing follage that have soaked up the heat from the sun all day and hold a decent night time temp. I dont even lower mine that much while breeding. The lowest they get is 69-70 during breeding season. I would gradually bring your night time temps up to 75.

67 degrees is the air temp. There is a under tank heater and a large pile of aspen shavings that she crawls under so it is much warmer where she actuallys hides. Sorry for not clarifying in original post.

I get alot of people who call wondering about that and many times have been told about how they have it in a aqurium with a basking spot at night they kill the heat in the basking area and the room temp drops down really low, with no other heat sources the animals get to cold, anyway cool thanks

Back in the early 90's till people started being carefull about their inbreeding there was a lot of people who lost animals in this manner due to inbreeding not over feeding. Offspring would last one two years up and die for no reason while proper care was being taken. Others would develope interenal problems out of the blue. They were weak from being inbreed. Even in colombians all the ones I have ever heard of dieing from being powerfeed lasted 3yrs

even people can diue from overeating but I have never heard of any teenagers dieing from it, late 20's maybe

That animal you got from me is a yearling not 2yrs as you said below. was he power feed no, kept hot to speed up his metabolism, no, He just grew at a good rate.
Dumerils can reach 30-36 inches within a year without a problem does it mean their being power feed? No, some lines will grow faster then others. Now 5ft at 2yrs, I think that depends on the persons defifnition of 5ft. Some of my smaller adults are barley over 4ft, their proven animals. Their not fat but they have good body weight on them, everyone who sees them swares their atleast 5ft. Get a string out and run it down there spin on a good day they may hit 4ft2. If you talking a solid 5 and think as a baseball then ya Id say there fed a little heavy

In any event there is nothing wrong with a properly feed yearling at 36 inches or their about with proper weight. an actual 5ft animal thats overweight at 2yrs ya even with the fast growers that being over feed because once they hit 4ft their growth in length slows and they start putting on girth.
