a turtle's size

dsres Jun 23, 2003 11:15 AM

I have two 2 - 2.5" RES.
I was wondering in about how much time will they be around 4 - 5"?
What size tank would you recommend for 2 turts around 4-5"?
I have a 10" gal now and they seem happy enough. Should I move to a 20" Long first or jump to a big size sooner?

I'd rather keep maintenance down so I am concerned about having to deal with a big tank too soon if I can wait a couple of years before jumping to a big tank. I don't mind just getting a 20Long soon since my current equipment (heater, filter, etc) would work for a 20Long as well even though I would end up spending more money in the long run as they grow.

It really depends, how long have you had them and how big where they then? What do you feed them and how often also what the water temp? Normally in captivty a RES would grow 3-4'' with in 18 months or less some can be that size at 8 months (althought that not really a good thing)! Since you have two I wouldn't go smaller than 55 gallons and its always best to get as large as possible. be prepared to need atleast a 90 gallon tank for two males up 125 for two female and as said that is the least for proper care.

I had one since last November (7 months ago) and it has grown from 1.5" to a little over 2". I got the other a couple of months ago and it was already 2". Its now about 2.3" inches or so. So I figure about 1/2 inch in 6 months?
The water temp is between 75 - 80 degrees and I feed them about 5-6 Reptomin sticks (or some equivalent of other foods) each, every day for 5 days and 2 days of veggies.
According to that rate, it would be 2 more years before they were over 4" but I don't know if they have a growth spurt or something.

well yours are growing on a kinda slow rate not a bad thing do. yes the can have growth spurts but if you kept the food intake the same its not highly likely.
