I'm getting a baby yellow rat snake...

caecilianman02 Aug 03, 2004 06:20 PM

Hi there:

I have recently decided to purchase a young yellow rat snake. I have only seen one for sale around here. I will be going to the All Ohio reptile show on August 21st anyway, and heard that people come from all around to buy, sell and trade snakes.
I bet that there will be some nice yellow rats there. Even if there aren't, I can always get cage accents, furniture and tons of new naturalistic vivarium supplies. But do you think they may have them. I have ordered a fire salamander online, and all went well, but shipping is pretty expensive, and I want to observe the individual firsthand.
I have an obsession with large colubrids, just like every other herptile!

They should have rat snakes and you might be able to pick up a few yellows. There is always one or two breeders who have them. I was going to order a few more snakes online but I am actually waiting to attend the NARBC when it comes to Philadelphia PA in November. I am hoping to get myself an Eastern King Snake, some decor and other stuff. My wife is letting get one more snake and I want something that gets to around 6 feet. I don't like boids so I figure and Eastern King is a good choice!

I have a female corn who is about 3 1/2 feet right now but I would be suprised if she gets 4 1/2 feet long. I have a male cali king who could reach 5 feet.He is already over 2 1/2 feet long and was hatched late 2003.He grew so much in 4 months it hasn't been funny! I just bought a late 2003 yellow rat snake from Terry Parks. He is about 14 inches long and could reach 6feet but will mostly get around the 4-5 1/2 foot range.

I would definately wait to attend the show before buying any more reptiles. You will definately see something you like. I went to one and while I didn't buy anything I definately wanted to buy 3-4 different snakes but my wife held me back because I had just got the yellow rat a week earlier..lol.

Big colubrids do have their appeal. Still, much is to be said in favor of species that top out under 4'. I have a beautiful Leucistic Texas which of course will get in the 7' range, and a (unicolor) C.A. Indigo, but I also have a Regal ringneck (tops at 30" and also a pair of S. Fla mole kings that are stars in my collection. And they take less room and eat less so you can keep more.

You stand a pretty good chance of finding a baby yellow rat at the Ohio show, especially this time of year. You will certainly find a selection of North American Ratsnakes. Last month I bought a Baird's ratsnake and saw grey rats, Texas rats, everglades and lots of black rats. Joliff usually has a nice variety of black rats there (white-side, albino, brindle).
Good luck. See ya there! Duffy

How is your baird dueing duffy? Mine actually went into shed this week. Kind of exciting because I thought she looked bright already but know I can see where it has started and she will look even better. Has yours eaten yet. I tried Friday when I fed my corn and she just pushed it around. I will try again tonight. Hopefully she will be done with her shed today. I soaked her last night since she has been trying to shed for 2 days now. Let me know how yours is doing.

GREAT!!! He's a little eating machine! Also seems really active compared to other baby ratsnakes I have had (especially corns). He even cruises around after a meal. I just tonight noticed that he has "eye spots" underneath his real eyes so that he looks like he's lookin' at you even when viewed from below. I don't know if that's a typical baby baird trait or not.
Yours will no doubt start eating once he sheds.
Just fed him again about half an hour ago. He does NOT mess around...Knows right what the whole "food thing" is all about.
I have high hopes for him. Thanks for askin' and keep me posted on yours. Duffy

The little yellow rat I just got from Terry Parks is VERY ACTIVE! My other yellow rat,who escaped in June, was NEVER out or active. All he did was sit in his hide all day or hide under the subtrate. Looked like the tank was empty half the time. This little guy I have now is always sitting on a plastic vine or just wandering around his enclousure. It's rather nice to see him out a lot since my other yellow was very shy. Very good eatter also! Has never refused a meal yet! He is even in his shedding cycle and I didn't notice until after I came back home with all my feeders. I figured let me give it a shot and he ate both small fuzzies I offered him. I didn't think he would eat!

A lot of people have said King snakes are shy and not very active but my king is the most active snake I have! He is out a lot and hardly ever in any of his hides. Most of the time I just think he is looking for food..lol.

My corn is very shy. She will come out when no one is around at night time(I know they tend to be noctural). If she spots me she will look at me then slowly goto her hide or just disappear under the subtrate.

Each snake has his her own personality. My corn will actually rattle her tail at me sometimes but never once has struck me. She is just letting me know she is a little mad! My king doesn't even care. I can pick him up with no problems and he will just sit on my arm flicking his tongue making sure I am not food! The little yellow will strike at me and try to flee a lot but he is a very small snake and thats to be expected but he seems to be taming down now when I pick him up. He isn't as flighty as he was.

I have come to expect daytime hiding from my young corns, although my older ones are more active the closer you get to feeding day (where's the RAT!). My snow has the habit of peeking out from her hide almost any time I am in the room just to check things out. Yup, they each have their own little quirks. Love 'em all. Can't wait to watch the new guy go through pattern/color changes. Duffy

I wish I had a cam so I could show mine. She has a lot more black in her. I ask the seller if he knew which of the 2, the other didn't have as much black, would end up with better colors. He said he was not sure but suggested the one I ended up with because it still had a bulge from eating and didn't know if his buddy could get the other to eat. I was curious too as to whether the hatchling pattern/color affects the color as an adult.

My ratsnake book suggests that gender may be a factor, with males tending more towards orange and females growing slightly longer (I'm going from memory here, but I think I got it right).
A good look at both parents will most likely be your best indication of adult color. I really don't know that much about these little guys yet, but am looking forward to learning.

Can't see the markings I was talking about from that pic. Just noticed yesterday...If you view the head from underneath (like when he's exploring up the side of the tank), it looks like he has eyes on, well, his chin. Seems like an adaptive pattern, but I have not closely examined baby bairds enough to know if it is the norm. I would bet that it is. I'm really pleased with this particular addition to my ratsnake collection. Duffy
