Baby chameleons and water, what is the best way?

voidix Aug 03, 2004 07:11 PM

I just got my baby chameleon, and have only had him for about 3 days. He seems to be doing fine, and is very active and hungry, however, I am concerned about hydration. What is the best way to give water to a baby chameleon? I have a dripper installed that drips from the top of the cage down to a cup at the bottom. The drips follow alongside many leaves and sticks, so it would not be hard for the chameleon to get to, however, I have never seen him drink from it. How do I know that he is getting the amount of water that he needs? Along with the dripper I also spray him 2 or 3 times a day, however, every time I spray him and his surroundings he just runs and hides in some thicker leaves to avoid the water, and by the time he comes out, all of the water has evaporated. Is this activity something to be concerned about, or is this normal? Also, is there a better way that I should be hydrating him? Thanks for the help.

it's important to keep misting the cage even if you don't see him drink...veileds don't seem to drink much or they do it when your not around...if there is moving water in the cage that is easily accessable then most likely he is taking a gulp or two at his leisure...what's important is that it is always available

Most of my veileds won't drink immediately when I water them. So what I do is go through & lightly mist all my cages. I wait just a few minutes, then go back and really water them. This way seems to work fine for me. Most of them actually drink at the second offering.
Hope this helps,

I agree. Sometimes you have to get them in the drinking mode with a "primer" spray. Think about rainfall...it starts off as a sprinkle and gradually everything gets drenched. The cham has time to decide it wants to drink. I often know when they are ready as they start swallowing and adjusting their tongue. Also, for babies you want to be sure to use a very fine spray. Babies have been known to drown from trying to deal with large water droplets they get on their snouts or in their mouths.
