Substrate Issue

Sand is ok as long as it is not in the feeding area correct? We have sand in our cage, fine and sifted, but we are putting non-adhesive shelf liner over the part where the food bowls are. The only place they will ever come into contact with the sand is in their hide caves and under the basking areas. Will this be ok?

Any sand is a risk IMO, but that sounds about as safe as you can get with it.

It should be ok. Possible irrelavant question, what happends when you put live food in, and they make it to the sandy areas?

I have never had any problem with sand, and I used to raise all my dragons on it. I now use shelf-liner just in case, but I did try something like you are describing. We had a two part tank with a 4 inch divider. After 20 minutes of dragons in the tank there is sand on BOTH sides.
