Where might i find another Alligator lizard?

xxcolbyxx Aug 03, 2004 08:37 PM

I currently have a female southern alli. In the past, i have gotten extremely lucky and find these lizards in the strangest places. The most recent was sleeping under my garden hose. Before, they all used to fall into my pool, where i rescue them. Now, i can't seem to find anymore! I know they are pretty good at hiding, but i just can't seem to find them. Any tips on where they might be living? I live in Southern California, in Orange County, if that helps at all. I don't have a male alli to breed with so my chances of raising them are quite slim.

I usually find them in the cliffs by the beach here in WA. And since thats my back yard I find them quite often.

-Do you know what KIND of alligator lizard your looking for?

xxcolbyxx Aug 04, 2004 09:36 PM

What KIND? Well, now that i know that my area is somewhat, populated with southerns, i quess i'm trying to find a southern. In fact, any Alli lizard will do if it has a great tail. Too bad, i wished i would of lived in WA. Heard it's quite cold there? I know that they are around my house, but being smart little critters as they are, the are seldom seen (in my backyard)

I have Northerns up here, but in Eastern WA, I found one BIG southern with only half a tail, and unfortunately she has to be kept separate from the others because she bites them, and has in doing so has bit the other big ones tail off.

Im suggesting looking at about 4-6pm when the sun starts coming down and check in dry grass, thats where I have my best luck.

I'd get some pieces of plywood (the bigger the better) and lay them in areas you have previously found als. Check them weekly.

lol, so put plywood over my pool and under my garden hose? Those are the only places i find them. Most (99%) of them just fall in the pool. I don't know where they are anymore. We don't have wild grass, or any of those lush vegation up north. I live in southern CA, near the Mojave desert. I have tried to make a "trap" by using two hollowed UPS tubes and taping one end. I have placed these by the pool area hoping they will go in it. So far, no luck at all. Is it possible to special order one at a pet store?

Dont buy one, and I dont even think you could legally.

Just keep looking... and if you find a snake... send it my way... actually find anything and send it my way.

Look around when the sun falls.

-Place the plywood by the pool.

Hey whats up? I also live in Orange County California. In the two cities I've lived in the Alligator Lizards always seem to pop up at random times. This includes most species. I don't think I've ever seen one specie dominate over another in common occurences. But the Southern seems to be the one which is the biggest that you will usually see. I also want to keep two of the Southern Aligators and try and breed them. But I do not want to catch big ones in my yard or in the area. It will cause damage to the system if you take the adults out. (So i'll buy out of the area so i'll feel less guilty, or maybe raise form babies) But I usually see mine under rocks. You'll walk, hit a rock by accident and there will be one or two under neath it. Look under pieces of wood, in sheds, places w/ allot of cludder. Probably any place you can find a black widow spider I bet theres an Ali in the area under soemhting. Also look next to the planters near your house like against the walls. usually there are crevices that they like to go underneath. Also the garage. Countless times this year they have almost been ran over by the car and my mom flips out when she seems them.

HOLY CRAP!! They do come up inn the most random places! While i was helping my dad plant trees, i lifted a bad of fertilizer and there was one. I quickly tried to flush him in the open, but did a quick reverse and went into a hole in the brick. I've tried flushing him out, but it didn't work. Dang, too bad i didn't catch it. I justlove the way they look. Jeez, i have the worst luck with store bought pets. I ussed to own a Leopard Gecko, and Bearded Dragon, and all died out within 13 months. Then these free lizards outside has lasted nearly 3 years with me.

haha, get a cricket and put it on fishing line next time one does that! Easiest way for me to get them out.
