Possible Egg Bound Female... long

alieliza Aug 03, 2004 08:46 PM

One of our females (Blondie) definitely has eggs. She is 2 years old. They seem to have been forming over the past two weeks. She hasn't laid yet, and looks a little swollen. We have soaked her in warm water and even massaged her belly a little. We took the male out of the cage, because he seems to be hounding her.... could it be that he is stressing her out, thus resulting in her delay of laying?
Could it be that she is egg bound? This is her first time breeding (as far as we know... her first time with us.) Before becoming gravid she weighed in at about 45 grams.
We also have another female (Oval) who has been laying eggs also.... she seems to be right near her the majority of the time... the other one I talk about here has laid unfertile eggs recently.

She (Blondie, the possible egg bound leo) was eating a good amount, and has slowed significantly to acting disinterested in food... I know this is a sign of getting ready to lay, but also a sign of being egg bound. I dont know how to tell is she is physically uncomfortable, but shes not as skittish & is more calm than she usually is.

We are just a little concerned.... Is there anything we can do for her?

Our temps are 80-85 during the day, with an undertank heater, and at night around 70-74. Repti-carpet on the ground, one humid hide with paper towel, one with peat moss, and one regular hide with heat pad under it.

Any advice is appreciated.

Seeing as how she has never layed before, she could be egg bound. Keep the male out of the cage for now. I would say just to give her a little bit longer and if she looses some weight or doesn't lay within a week or two from the time the eggs are visible then take her in to the vet. I wouldn't worry too much about the slowing apetite, some of my females go 3 or four days without eating before laying ( I don't think your post said how long she's stopped eating). Maybe throw in another humid hide as well to give her some options.

I was in the same situation with my female. I thought for sure she was eggbound, but breeders I talked to at our nearby monthly reptile show say that eggbound leos are uncommon. I was giving my female warm baths. She also stopped eating (for over 4 days) and looked like she swallowed another gecko. The very day I was going to set up an appointment for her she layed them. But if you want to be sure,it would'nt hurt to take her to the vet.
Hope this helped.
