Evenings and mornings may prevail for you. It is basically to hot during the day this time of year from my experience unless you find a nice cool shady canyon.

What is the area around you like? I have a nice field in my backyard too but there is too much development nearby to support snakes. They need an area at least 5 square miles to support a population. There should be enough area for them where I live as there are other houses with similar backyards for some distance and then one undeveloped field, but the local traffic will smash them when they get on the road so it is rare to find them in town. If you want cal kings, I hear grassy fields are good. Out here in the desert, sparse vegetation seems to work well. For mtn kings, rocky areas near water. Right now Im still finding cal kings by night even though its pretty warm out, but they seem to like cooler temps as they are out on the cool nights in March and April as well. Ive never found them by day, only under cover of darkness.
