Personally, I REALLY like shredded newspaper. Its very cheap (free) and if you put it through a paper shredder it looks good.

I am using a "strip cut" paper shredder that is working very well for me. The alternative is a "confetti cut", which I have not tried.

I hate to pay for a substrate that I will be throwing away once a week or so. The sand needs a lot of work and is very expensive. You can't scoop up EVERY flake of skin and piece of feces out of the sand. I would rather throw away ALL the substrate every week or so and keep a sanitized enviroment.

I know out in the wild it is not sanitized, but these are not wild snakes.

Just my opinion.

I wish Jeff, but of course I have two male easterns and no female. I do have a question, though. When do your WC males start eating again. Mine haven't eaten since May.

Martin,wc adult easterns can be very difficult to acclimate.I have a couple I caught last August-the male has only recently eaten anything as I have force-fed a couple fuzzies and the female ate 1(1!!!)mole this spring then laid me a clutch of 7 eggs! She ate another mole and now a fuzzy so I think she may finally be coming around. The key I had always thought was to get them to brumation and they feed well coming out--not necessarily so.But now its baby snake season too, they seem to do well with newborn snakes of most any type.Keep in touch,Jeff

Mine fed readily on f/t mice when caught last fall. They went off feed in October and were brumated until late February. They ate great until May and haven't eaten since. Like I said, they fed well this spring so it's not like they're underweight. I assumed it was a breeding fast but I would think the breeding season would be over for them by now. Anyway, I was just curious.
