wasted food?

caietaro Aug 03, 2004 09:32 PM

I picked up some frozen rats for my borneo male today as it was time for him to eat again, when I got him out of his cage though, I saw he was getting ready to shed. I had unfortunately already thawed out the rat for him. Ofcourse he refused to eat it lol I was just wondering what ya'll do in this case? I unfortunately can't feed it to anything else. You can't re-freeze them can you? Should I just accept the fact that its a wasted rat?

I guess depending on the condition of the rat you could refreeze it? I have done it before but after the second dethaw it isnt soo good. Luckily if ones in shed I can just throw it in another cage now.

Caetaro, instead of just throwing it away,I sometimes just leave it in the hide box/cage and see if she'll eat it.If the cage is warm enough and humid enough they usually can't resist.Mostly all my snakes especially my bloods it in shed. The only ones that don't are my wild caught. Hey,
Not the best of ideas, but yes! I have refrozen food, depending on the condition of the rat. Sometimes they hold up well, and you can refreeze them and use it on a second feeding date with no problem.

If however, you smell any decay on that second feeding day, or after removing then it is that time to discard it, and start with a fresh one.
