Wait! Don't throw away that egg!!!!

LizardMom Aug 03, 2004 10:16 PM

Just last week when I was checking my incubator, I mentioned to my husband that I thought I was going to get my first 'no hatch.' One of the eggs in the one clutch did not seem to have grown at all, and, when I carefully picked it up, it seemed to have no weight at all, and, instead of the nice turgid feel, it seemed papery and brittle.

Look what greeted me today!! And my husband complains that I never throw anything away!

I just recently had a clutch where one hatched and 24 hours later the other egg in the clutch started to colapse. I thought it was a dud and started to cut it open, saw some blood come out and saw what I thought was the head.I assumed the egg held a dead fetus so instead of opening it up I threw the egg in a small waste container on my counter( I then empty that container when full into the garbage).About an hour later something told me to check the container and in it was the egg with a healthy baby about halfway out!!!!When cutting the egg what I thought was a dead fetus head was infact the yoke sac.I will never throw out anything unless it has completely molded AND colapsed.

That was a close one!!! I think 24 hours may have been a little premature in cutting it open. I recently had a pair eggs that were kept in the same container in the same conditions hatch about 3 1/2 days apart. I was really stressing out about the second one when poof: baby in the incubator overnight! Sometimes I REALLY love doing this =)

I have a baby that hatched 3 weeks ago. The clutchmate STILL hasn't hatched yet, but the egg looks completely healthy. I can even see the veins and baby inside. Hopefully soon he'll come out....

3 weeks? wow.

Can you see the fetus moving at all? When you gently tap the side of the egg, does the fetus react?

We had a couple like that... They ended up being "stillborn."

I can't see it moving in there, but I can see it. It is probably stillborn, do you think that I should try cutting it??

Wow! Talk about lucky! The one I had actually started to collapse when I picked it up the week before it hatched. I thought there was nothing in it. Can you imagine if I had just crushed it between my fingers?
