Is it possible to have a male retic with no spurs?

kottonmouthking Jun 23, 2003 11:54 AM

Hi. I posted about this a while ago. I've always assumed my 10-11 foot normal retic was a male. Just going on his rate of growth, girth, size, tail length, the way he looks. Everything. I think you can pretty much tell the difference between male and female retics just by looking at them after they get past the point of being a hatchling. Anyway, I just noticed recently that he has no spurs at all. Like not even small ones. They're just not there. That kind of threw me off. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I know probing would be the quickest way to clear all this up and give me a definite answer but I don't have a set of probes and what the hell, might as well just do it the hard way. And there's nothing going on in this forum anyway. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks alot.

If there are no spurs present, you probably have a female...However, in my experience, sexing by tail spurs wasn't accurate. I was told mine was female based on "small" spurs. A friend and I probed "her" and it was a HIM. We even did it twice just to make sure...definitely a boy here. So, I would suggest that you find someone in your area with probing experience and ask them to help you. Otherwise, just name your snake something suitable for a girl or a boy just in case. LOL!
