Tegu pic of the week

davel Aug 03, 2004 11:51 PM

These guys are growing fast, now 16" TL. The pattern and color seems to be constantly changing...more orange and more white areas are popping up...taming is coming along, but I am still using the tub for taking pics as they are most mellow during a bath.

Kind of best of both words...it is kind of like a red without the skin problem and fruit requirement, and kind of like a blue with unpredictable red color. The size is perfect also, larger than a blue but not as huge as a red. Every shed is a new surprise.

Although I enjoy pure tegus, it is neat working with these Hybrids as the potential for "designer" breeding is wide open...cross them back to a red, cross them to a B/W, cross them back to a blue, cross them into the Albino line, etc...but I am getting ahead of myself as I have to first learn about Tegu breeding.

One of the most colorful monitor I had was a 5-way cross...not really 5 way, but that is what we called it. It was a argus/sand bred to a gould, and then bred back to argus/sand...count them up and you get 5...courtesy of Frank Retes.

Wow sounds like your Monitor was stunning. Hey I have a blue female a red male and an Arg b&w female. I have been trying to locate info on breeding these guys for a while now without any luck. I posted a question a while back and got no answers. My wife thinks she saw our red male linked to our arg female. I did not know if they were able to mate or not.
If you find any good info on breeding these wonderful little guys would you let me know where you found it. I will do the same for you if I stumble across any.
Thank you and good luck with those two, I can not wait to see pics of them as they get older and thier coloring comes in.

if you are asking if it is possible for your red male to breed your B/W female. I can tell you, I know it has been done in the past from a reliable source. Of course, the Blue x Red has already been done.
Bert has told me that from his experience, his B/W that even missed one hibernation in the past has never bred for him later. Stella breeds blue with or without hibernation. Both have produced many tegus.
As for guidance during breeding, I will lean on Stella, as I bought my guys from her, her seemingly endless customer support seems well worth the purchase.
That is not to say anyting negative about Bert, as I hope to buy some reds from him next month...it is just that, that transaction has not happened yet for me to comment on.

I do not know if the B&W has ever hybernated since my wife just adopted her. My Blue has never hybernated and the red I also can not say for sure but has not hybernated since I got him almost a year ago. He did go through along with my blue a few months of being very slugish and sleeping alot but they always got up to eat and move a little.
I do not want to bug either the Bert or Stella as I did not get any of my animals from them they are all three adoptions in a manner of speaking. I did not pay for any of them. I will keep searching for advice as long as people are willing to give it to me. Good luck with the reds I love mine.
