what kind of corn is this?

polarpooch1 Aug 04, 2004 12:29 AM

I have no clue about colors of corns. I posted a pic earlier of my new corn going into a shed. Well, either she shed, and I can't find the molt, or she's cleared up pre shed and is still getting ready for it...still...now you can see the colors better. First I was told it was a "snowflake", whatever that is...now I'm told it's a "candy corn" (the guy who had her couldn't keep her, so we took her in). Can't find that color on any of the webpages I've found. So I'll ask the pros here! Officially, what color is this corn? Someone earlier said "creamsicle", but it doesn't look quite like those pics I've seen. I suppose it doesn't matter really, but I would really like to know. Either way, she's very pretty.

And...is that white between the scales supposed to be there, or had her previous owner fed her animals that are too large and stretched her scales? I've never had a snake stretched, so I'm not quite sure what stretched scales would look like. Will it go away or is it permanent? He told me she ate two full sized mice a week. I fed her a mouse on Friday, which she happily consumed, but it looked like she'd burst trying to get it down. Does that sound right? Two full sized mice?

OH...she's 4 years old as well...

Thanks in advance!

-Vicki

She's got pretty gold "dots" on her, and a beautiful gold belly! I'm quite pleased at how nice looking she is, but I'd still like to know what kind she is.

I may be wrong but on my screen it looks like she has quite a bit of white. She is a VERY PRETTY snake, motleys are one of my favorites. (I like all the different types of patterns) This is my sunglow motley, she is more orange and yellow, where some are more red and yellow/orange.
The camera flash glares off of her scales, so she looks like she had white, but in reality she has none.

trying to make sure you can see everything here. Anyone have an answer?

Im guessing an amel/motley?Your new corn needs some humidity.I can see dead skin hanging.I feed my adults a mouse or 2 every three weeks. It wouldnt hurt to lightly spray down the bedding with some water.A nice size waterbowl your corn can soak in would be great also...Paul

I didn't notice any skin flaking or hanging when I handled her last night. Her humidity is 60% in her cage, and she has two water bowls and two hides. She has not shed yet, but is probably ready to. Do corn snakes' color's clear up before they shed?

She does look a lot like one of the pictures of an amel/motley I saw online. I'll go with that then, unless someone directs me elsewhere. Thanks!

If the belly is complete white/orange without any checkers it is an Amel Motley.

Marcel,
Someone below mentioned the red eye feature of sunglows. If I have a snake that is amel-motley, with no belly checks, very little white (almost none), a very bright red and orange coloring, and red eyes - does this mean that this is a sunglow?
thanks!

Actually, Sunglow means no white. Selective bred for lacking all white. That is the white around the saddles. Yours could definatly be defined as a Sunglow Motley.

OK - I thought I had it straight, but now I'm not sure again.
What is the difference, between a Hypo - no black; an Amel - also no black; and a Sunglow - no black or white? I looked at some pics and it seemed that the hypos were no black or white, but that the color was not nearly as bright as the amel or the sunglow. I know that there is a genetic difference (thanks to your genetics wizard, Marcel!), but I am not exactly sure what it is.
Thanks everyone for putting up with a genetics neophite - I'll get it down sooner or later.
P.S. Is there a good book on this stuff?

Hypo replaces the black with brown, the amel has no brown or black, and the sunglow is an amel with no white (the yellow replaces the white). Plus, the hypos have darker eyes, whereas the amels and the sunglows have the red eyes. At least I think that is the way it is.

Hypomelanistic means few Black. Hypo = few and Melanistic means Black. Amelanistic means No black at all. Some say Sunglow is a Hypo Amel because where a Hypo has almost no black a Sunglow has almost no white.
