Falling in Love with Boas...

poetichusky Aug 04, 2004 01:44 AM

Hey all,
I don't normally post in the boa forums, as I've been more of a python girl myself, up until today. I'm slowly falling in love with Boas. I had always thought they were kind of blah and looked all the same to me. Boy I was wrong! The stuff they are breeding these day is awesome! I must say that some pics of some beautiful Col. Ghosts did it for me. What a beautiful creature. I keep Ball Pythons at the moment along with one Burmese, but I'm seriously thinking about Boas now. What are their cage size requirements? Columbians that is. I'm also still confused with some of the genetics(like Possible Supers and what not), but I guess I can learn. I'm so used to BP genetics. Snow Boas, omg! They're amazingly stunning. Gosh, listen to me. I'll have all my BP's replaced with Boas if I keep this up. A bad thing? Who knows. I'm guessing they're easier to breed? Wouldn't have to fool with incubators as they have live births. The prices are more reasonable than BP prices. It also appears they are more slow-growing than BP's. So much to learn, so little time. Just thought I'd share. )

PS- Argentines are another one of my favs. I met one in person and that can do it sometimes, lol. Any Argentine morphs? I saw some Salmontines, but those are hybrids? I'm confused with genetics and localities, someone fill me in please. lol

Better watch out.. it is addictive, may cause loss of sleep.
I enjoy all snakes but boas are my favorite probably to the size of litters and the live birth.
They just get me going.

Cathy, you certainly can't go wrong with boas... and it's only going to get better from here.

With regards to "replacing" your bp's. I kept and bred both for the past few years and finally decided this year that I didn't want to mess with the bp's any longer. Everything you said was right on except for the breeding bit.... Boas are much more difficult to breed then ball pythons. Yes, you don't have to incubate eggs, but in my experience... I never struggled to get bp's gravid... even with one male working 4 females. That's something that's almost unheard of with boas. It's not that boas are impossible to breed by any means, but they are much more "hit and miss" then the bp's. It's also a real treat to just feed EVERYONE frozen/thawed and not have to deal with stubborn or finicky eaters.

And since you said you like the snows... here's a pic of Snow White... my lil princess

This board is a virtual treasure trove of information and there are a lot of good people here w/ great information. Be sure to try and use the search feature to look up morph/genetic/husbandry info... there's LOTS to read.

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions you can't find the answers to....

Enjoy!

Guy,
Thanks for the info on breeding. Snow White is absolutely gorgeous! ~~~Drool~~~ I think Snow boas are so much more breathtaking than Snow BP's. Gee, I'd never thought I'd say that. My favs so far w/ Boas are the Snow and Ghost morphs. Luckliy MY BP's and my Burmese are on FT and aren't too picky. I have dealt with BP's in the past that would forever turn their nose up to PK, nevermind FT, lol. They can be pains to feed.

but I always liked boas better, mostly their looks and more outgoing personalities. I also heard that pythons have longer teeth, thankfully I've never found out for sure.

I recently got a couple hog island boas, they are beautiful and seldom get over 6 feet.

Salmontines are probably a larger boa than I can deal with due to my bad back, but good gravy are they awesome!!! I've found a few websites with good "eye candy," If you would like to send me an e-mail I can give you some links.

I have been bitten by Balls before, but they never have done much damage. No more than some scratches, but they do draw blood. Funny tho, I have a BP that's nasty as heck. Can't even clean or change her water without her trying to tag me, yet my Burmese is the biggest mush.
