Very nice but the bedding and caging needs to be changed.....
AND WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST? I'VE KEPT GABOONS ON ASPEN IN LARGE TANKS FOR YEARS NOW. ANY HELP IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED HOWEVER.
Hello,
Not sure what he had against the enclosure other than it is not shatter resistant. I use laminates (the clear book covers) on my glass enclosures so even if it cracks it won't allow an escape, and also shouldn't allow the snake to get hurt as easily. Large enclosures are best for working conditions, and they make it easier for the animal to regulate its temps when properly provided with a warmer and a cooler spot of the enclosure.
As far as the aspen bedding...it is good and bad. It can easily get moldy or hold too high of a humidity level for some species. I use newspaper in most of my enclosures. It doesn't look very natural, but its cheap and cleaning is very easy! It makes it a sinch to swap out one layer of paper every 3-4 days (or whenever needed). Wood chips can also be swallowed, and don't digest very well once ingested. That may be what he had against them?
Just my thoughts! Your gabby is a great looking snake! If you can't find a female gabby try a rhino or puff for a bitis hybrid! Hybrids are worth a good bit of money in the hobby, and are found naturally, while rare, they do exsist.
Take Care,
Steve Clark
that is a beautiful snake.
THANKS BRO. HE'S A MONSTER AND HEAVY..
Sorry if it sounded bad..... Aspen is not the bedding of choice for gaboons.... Try cypress mulch.... It keeps perfect humidity levels..... Also all glass aquariums are a big mistake when it comes to keeping hots..... A vision or a boaphile or a presision style cage would be the best..... They are safer for the keeper and heat and humidity levels are much easier to maitain and stays pretty reliable..... I have been keeping and breeding gaboons, rhinos and puffs for well over ten years and find this to be the best system for these particular species..... Sorry if I sounded jerky in my first post.... That really is a beautiful gaboon..... I have a few pics up in the venomous forum of my 6 foot female.... Take a look when you get a chance.... Later bro....
