Question

Rottenweiler9 Aug 04, 2004 12:45 PM

I am thinking of getting a couple of these guys this weekend. My first question is, I see the color diff, but are there name diff as well. I heard one called the German Giant, is this the one that gets the biggest or do they all stay the same. I have had Iguanas, Basks, Water Dragons, but I have heard that these little guys are the best, so I thought I might try.

With in reason the german giants are some of the largest out there and the names are made up by the breeders mostly. They are the best reptile pet and i would say buy the ones you like the look of but more importantly choose by they way they act with you they all have very different personalitys just like people. scott

There are all different color morphs and names. It's important to keep track of if you want to breed them because you'll need to know if they are related in any way, and often beardies with the same name can be related. Otherwise just pick out the ones that look nice to you.

Any specific reason you want to get two of them? Unless you are 100% sure they are both female, you won't be able to house them together. Mating pairs are best kept in seperate enclosures except when breeding. Two males will definately fight, and even females will sometimes fight if they don't get along.
Anyways, I'm just saying this because it's a common misconception that beardies should be housed in groups, it's not the best thing. Better to just get one, or get two with seperate enclosures.

I did not know that you should not house two of them together. Everywhere I go I see adults together.

Two or three females together is usually fine. I have 10 cages (some of the females are together) and I've never had any problems. Sure a female will puff up at another, but no fights and no injures. The males do need to housed separately though. They'll fight with other males and harass the females to no end.

Yep, everywhere you go you're either seeing females together, or males and females housed together by people who don't know better (like pet stores or novice owners.) That's why it's such a common mistake new owners make. They see others housed together, so they buy two or three having no idea what sex they have, and run into problems down the road. Injuries, stress, breeding, inbreeding, are all problems that occur far too often with beardies. It's better that you know now, so you can be prepared and avoid those problems before they arise. That's why I thought I'd run it by you, just in case you didn't know.

They are basically all the same when it comes to color patterns, no difference in behavior. Some like the German Giant, and the Rankins, of course are gonna have difference in size. It really depends on how much you want to spend when it comes to color. I have owned a lot different reptiles over the years, (dragons, iguanas, skinks, chameleons, geckos, boas, tortoises, frogs, turtles) and by far the bearded dragons are the best pets in every direction.
