I'm currently designing a 180 gallon bowfront viv for my brother and I'm planning on putting an entire tree stump in there as a main focus point. Here's a couple of questions: 1) How do I disinfect such a large piece of wood and 2) can I apply a wood sealant (like Thompson's) to it to slow degradation? Thanks

First off..
I would not recomend using any kind of sealant.
Secondly
If you really want to use I would sugest boiling the stump. Ull probably have to use a large oil-type drunk

Ive designed many "showcase" terariums and I would suggest going with something fake, if your just using it as a central focal point. Ill look for a sight for u which makes branches and custome made object of of Cork. That should help you out a lotr, although it might be rather pricy

What type of wood are you planning to use ? Most turn into a moldy mess day after being put in the moist humid vivarium.

Probably bodark, it's a very heavy, dense wood that grows near my hometown in Texas.

DO NOT use any chemicals. the only kind of chemical you would ever want to use to clean wood it mild soap, but they is pushing it. you want to wash the wood off nicely with water then boil it or bake it in a oven at a low temperature. i have a long thread towards the bottom of the page about cleaning wood look for it will help a lot. i used bleach on my wood and had to remove it for the safety of my will be darts.

The stump is about 2 and one-half feet tall, so baking or boiling it would be an impossibility. The grooves in the bark are very deep and I'm afraid if I don't use some method other than soft soap soakings, that the stump won't be completely disinfected. Any ideas??
