F/T P/K = lazy snake

CaptainHook2 Aug 04, 2004 06:28 PM

I feed my snakes their prey from the end of a clip, just in case they miss (and they do miss even when it's right in front of them). Today my 3 1/2' ball simply wrapped around the rat I gave him. Made no effort at a strike, just wrapped around it and squeezed as if I was just handing it over to him. He may have winked at me, I'm not sure. I know this is the Burm Forum but the people I trust are here. Whatcha think?

Most snakes will lose their agressive feeding response after awhile of eating dead prey. I do not think that that means it is a lazy snake, but perhapse a asmart snake. I mean what sense is it to constrict and squeeze something that is already dead. Todd

All my boids are "lazy" like that. even to prefering to wait until the lights are off to eat. They just kinda go to where the rodent is, and begin swallowing.
My exception is my BRB...that one still strikes and coils as though it were in the wild!! I would not want to get tagged by this one.
My Burms however! WOW!! As I mentioned before in another post. I kinda throw the food in and run! I have one albino male that strikes and coils the first prety item, abut gets lazy with the second one.
I used to use 24" feeding tongs, now as I said, I throw the food in and run!
Even when reading posts here, I am amazed about the problems of switching over to f/t, or rabbits, because feeding response of my burms is almost scary!

My Boa has been fed p/k/ f/t for a long time now, hes nearing 5'. He still strikes the prey, and holds on, then swallows, not hit, coil, swallow. My BP will bite and coil it...hes been fed f.t for a few yrs. My African Rock just approaches it and swallows, i dont see much of his feeding habits.

I get mixed responses. One time my burm struck a chick, but wouldn't eat it. He struck and ate a guinea pig, but would not eat the second. I had to feed him a rat, then chase with the pig. Yesterday he came out with a strong response, then wouldn't take anything. I laid a rat in his cage and left. 60 seconds later he was eating the rat which I chased with a rabbit. These guys are worse than cats!

Never had any problems with my burms turning off to food at all.
Most of them would even begin going nuts as I would feed the others while the burms were shedding.
They usually eat even during a shed. I guess I'm lucky in that respect.
Now if only I could convert my BP to f/t. Damn thing wont eat anything but p/k small rats or gerbils. And that's after a 9 month fast.
