Frilly sick? Need help ASAP

Karu Aug 04, 2004 08:30 PM

A few weeks back my frilly lost part of his tail and has been acting very odd ever since. He'll eat, but only about 2 large crickets every 2 days (he's still a small little guy). He lays around all day, hardly moving at all.. He also does an odd thing with his had at times.. It looks like he's head bobbing at something, but he shakes it as if saying "no" and he does it slower than a normal head bob. Sometimes he moves a bit while breathing, but not often. He's in a 10 gal now, since he's small, but will be getting a 3'Hx3'Wx1.5'D cage in a matter of days (being built as we speak). Could the cage just be too small? Can I expect him to get active when his large cage has many places to climb and explore? Thanks for any help.

also I noticed when I pick him up, he's totally still. He wont move a muscle. And if you try to put him on a branch, he don't wanna grab onto it. What could be wrong with him?

If he/she's that bad already, I'd get him to a vet tomorrow morning.. he probably won't last long if he's not diagnosed and treated. Probably a combination of stress, dehydration and lack of food (if he/she hasn't been eating for a while).

You could feed him with an oral syrringe... by diluting a meat/vegetable mix baby food (I've used gerber chicken dinner) with about twice as much pedialyte. Placing a drop on his/her nose should make him start drinking. Doing this a few times a day can help with dehydration and improper diet.

The smaller cage is actually better for small frilleds... makes food easier to find. Plus moving into another new cage will only create more stress (which is probably part of what caused his condition). They get stressed out if they can see people/pets from their cage... just being moved into a new cage stresses them out. I'd place paper towels around the glass to block out his view of other animals/people.

I'd get the pedialyte/baby food mixture with an oral syrringe tonight and get to a vet asap if you don't see some improvement.

Alright, thanks. I'll get that stuff tonight and feed him some and see about a vet asap. If you'd like to see, here are some pics of him taken today.

I fed him that mixture today and he ate 2ml of it really quickly! He musta liked it. He ate about another .5ml a bit slower. It's good to see him getting some stuff in him. I'll probably do that twice a day so he always has something in his stomach.

He died today, 2 days before his vet appointment.

Sorry to hear that. My best guess would be that after the injury there was an infection that went septic. Or just high levels of stress from the injury.
Poor guy.
