Swollen and blackened epiglottis

Yasser Aug 04, 2004 08:56 PM

Anyone ever seen this in their pythons?
We have a Moluccan Python that has suddenly developed this about 5 weeks ago and it has not gone away. It has even swelled about an inch back into the throat and the tissue inside is a dark blue-black color. We have done full rounds of Baytril and Amikacin and nothing has seemed to phase it.
I can't find any info at all on any case like this and neither can the vet that we are working with. Nothing has been isolated through swabbing but it looks like a biopsy may be in order...not something we wish to do for fear of giving a new place to reintroduce perhaps another pathogen as well.
I am just curious if anyone has ever seen this kind of swelling and discoloration.
Thanks for any input.

Does it smell rotten? I had a similar symptom on a Black Ratsnake that had gone septic. She had also just started to develope blisters on her body. She had to have three rounds of Tazicef (ceftazidime) injections to clear it. The first actually got it out of her mostly but she had a residual in her sinus that was tough to clear. As you said, the other drugs did nothing to phase it. Hope that is some help.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?
