Moving Far Away

mefingas Aug 05, 2004 12:06 PM

Hi. In sept my husband and I are moving from Az to Mi. We have a year old leopard gecko and was wondering how to move it with us? We will be driving for three days and spendning nights in a hotel. What would be the best way to move our gecko? Do you think it would stress her out too much? Any suggestions would be helpful. I really dont want to give her up.

Thanks
Morgan

You could prolly ship it. I don't know any of the shipping methods for moving live animals but i'm sure if you asked around UPS, etc. you could find out more.

3 days is a bit far in a car, I don't want to say its ok cause it is your pet and i worry soo much when i take mine home. I regularly travel for 2 hours car and 1 hour ferry (LOUDon the car deck) and they seem fine.

. . . I know people who will be attending the daytona herp show. They will be gone 3-4 days, to sell snakes and geckos. You know what they will be packed in? displayed in? Shipped in? for all those days?

Deli Cups. And they will be more than fine!!

Put her in a nice larger deli cup- lightly moisten a paper towel (lightly), put it in there. Make sure he stays in a nice room temp range. Even if he's moderately healthy, he will make it and be happy to be in a nice, dark place for a couple days. It will be like vacation to him.

He won't starve or dehydrate. If you wish, you can moisten the towel mid-trip.

Good luck and happy moving.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking. When we got her she was in something like that. Should I feed her more a few days before we move her. My husband wanted to just bring her cage but I thought it might be a little jaring for her. The only other question I have is about keeping the temp good for her. During the drive she should be very comfy but what about at night? Hotels tend to be cold. We will be bring her normal home so we can set it up when we move to mi. Should we place her there in night with the heat lamp? Thanks for everything

. . . she won't starve. Heaven's, some of my adults, when they aren't laying, get fed 2x a week, and they are fat as hogs. I wouldn't feed them more then usual - the only thing you will have is a lot of poop in the deli.

I guess I would pack her in one of 2 things
1) and insulated shipping box with some newspaper crumpled up for cushion
2) a mini-cooler, with crumpled newspaper.

Both should keep the heat more even at night, and the dark will be soothing. If you are worried about air - stick a pencil in the lid at night, but it should be fine.

Good luck.

PS - the more you worry about her, the worse she will be. I swear leos feel bad vibes/mojo. . . .
