Question re: Grasses & fertilizers

herbie Jun 23, 2003 02:20 PM

I am gearing up to get back into toroises after a hiatus, and am interested in the Leopards specifically.

I have a lush lawn. However, it has been regularly fertlized with a light application of 10-10-10 garden fertilizer. The last application was about 3 weeks ago. The lawn has not had any insecticide or herbicide introduced in over a year.

Does anyone have an opinion on how long I should wait before it is safe allowing a tortoise to graze??

Wait a minimum of 3 lawn mowings with plenty of watering in
between that. Use a bag to get the clippings for those times
or rake them up. What kind of grass do you have that you
fertilize, my front yard is perfect centipede which we fertilize
twice a year but my sulcata absolutey ignores it anyways.
The backyard where he is and his pen is bermuda grass and some
weeds (not as many as I would like of course! lol!) We've
added lime to that once because to balance the soil PH. That was
it.
