My musk turtles...they have a plumped look to them when all limbs and head are pulled in close to the body as the flesh rolls up over the face and all. When legs and head are extended however the cavitives formed under the carapace shell are noticably slim and sleek along the flesh...there is no gross fatty deposits on the limbs filling that 'open' space....neck is also sleek looking, not puffy. As long as the turtle doesn't look like it has swelled up with a case of hives then it probably means you are feeding enough but not too much to cause obesity.
Unlike painted turtles and red ear sliders, I honestly do not think I have ever seen a musk turtle suffering from obesity. Musks are scavengers that pretty much know when they have had enough to eat...or they may just be working off all those calories constantly roaming and poking around the tank looking for another snack <g>
