new snake...question (kinda long)

drako32186 Aug 05, 2004 04:47 PM

I recently adopted a new corn from someone bringing it into a pet store saying that they couldn't care for it anymore. They said that they held it often until lately. However, the little guy doesn't act like it's been handled often and possibly not much at all. It rattles it's tail at me if I simply look at it. I'm going to let it settle in before I try to hold it alot or anything.

Anyway, on to my question: In the past week, the corn has eaten 12 pinkies and a fuzzy. Is it possible to over feed it? I mean, it's not tiny so it's not like it's bulging or anything. It looks completely normal and feeds like it hasn't eaten on months. It's probably around 2 feet long. I just odn't want to harm the little guy.

Thanks,

-Drako

PS. I think it's an okeettee, but I don't know the sex yet

My corn is around 30" now and I was feeding him 2 fuzzies a week. I just bought 50 crawlers for him to start on now and they seem to be about the right size. I think all of that food in a week would be too much for yours. As far as the handling, I'm sure if you just keep working with him after he is settled into his new home he will be ok.

the pet store fed it 9 pinks when they got it.

I didn't know this

So I gave it 3 pinks and a fuzzy....thinking that it had been a long time since it's last meal...

A corn at 2 feet should not be feeding on pinkies at all. A snake that big will be able to eat 10 pinkies no problems and still not have enough nutrition to do it any good. Your best bet in my opinion is to feed it small adult mice.If you feel the snakes head is to small for small adult mice then try hoppers or large fuzzies. Most snakes that I have had I have switched from pinkies to fuzzies once the snake gets in the range of 14-15 inches long and all seemed to handle them fairly easy.

I wouldn't have fed it pinkies at all, but that's all that I had and the place I buy them was closed. I got the snake at like 11 pm, so what I had in my freezer was my only choice. I plan on feeding it small mice, possibly prekilled since it had such a good response last time. I just wanted to make sure it didn't eat too much. Thanks for all the help.

My new snake did the tail rattle alot when i first got it, Mainly when i cleaned the cage or changed the water. What i have learned is ignore it and go on with your business, if you are cleaning or changing water keep doing it slowly with no sudden jerky motions.

Now my snake doesn't tail rattle anymore, it stoped at about two
weeks or so.

good luck with your new snake
