advice on buying FBT

waldo Jun 23, 2003 02:43 PM

I am going to get 2 FBT and was wondering if there is anything I should look for when I pick them out?and how do I tell the sexes apart?any other advice would be great,I am going to keep them in a 10 gal tank but I'm not quite sure how I'm going to set it up.

Great! They're a nice toad to start out with, and give hours of enjoyment to watch. One of the most important things to look for is to make sure the FBTs, aren't thin in appearance. If they're really thin, it means they either have internal parasites or haven't been fed properly. But they could have parasites if they're stocky looking. Another thing is, they really need at least a 20L tank when they're adults. Make sure you clean the tank thouroughly every week because they're toxic and a build up of their toxins can kill them if the tank isn't cleaned out often. Ideally they should be bought captive bred from a breeder, but it's usually hard for most people to locate a breeder of FBTs. Good luck!

well you really cant tell the sex of them at the store. the only way to tell them apart is who "croaks" and normally they wont do that in the pet store. look for one that is moving and appears energetic.

when i bought my FBTs i got i tried to get a male and a female...i guessed that the thinner one which appeared to have nuptial pads was the male, and that the fatter one w/o the pads was the female...and after having them for a month and adding another male, i'm pretty sure i was right...the boys have been making lots of noise lately and loving the water...the female keeps to herself on land though...anyway, like someone rc_racer said, make sure they're active...that's a safe bet...good luck...they're a great first amphibian!
and rc_racer, i checked out yer tank set-up pics...they're AMAZING...truly an inspiration...
