The belly has to be completely devoid of checks.

Some show the circle-back pattern, but you can have a motley that looks normal from above and the only way to tell it's a motley is by looking at the belly.

It is a simple ressive trait.

I have several Motleys and striped motleys that have a very small amount of checks on the belly. The Belly checks are not always completly gove or devoid. I also get them with bleed over color from the top, such as this Crimson Motley's belly.
As you can see by the pictures she has 3-4 checks up by her head and then several more that are orange going all the way down, as well as the red bleed over that is working its way under the belly too

Looks a lot like a milksnake phase, and from what I've heard they can mimic motleys.

Yes it is a banded or "Milk Snake" Phase. That is just another version of the motley gene, just like the Motley Striped or Cubed Corns are. They Motley Gene is very variable and one of my favorite genes to play with. It comes out in so many ways. I will have to take a belly and top pic of the cubed ones too. Some of them have checks. I just wish I had one that is as well circled as the one posted above. Beautiful
Thanks

The motley gene is a simple recessive trait just like anery, amel, caramel, etc... The easy way to find out if a snake is motley is to look at the belly. The belly will have no pattern like other corns do. If that dosen't give it away then look at the circles on the back.
