Would it be alright to feed crayfish to a bluetailed monitor?.....

kcaiman Aug 05, 2004 06:27 PM

I know that they eat crabs in the wild but i still am hesitant to risk anything happening to it. its about a 1 1/2 - 2 inch long crayfish with claws long enough that it could give him a good pinch. could i still give it to him?

If you don't mind paying the price (I believe they get hooked on them, and crayfish can be expensive), I think you can feed them frozen (then thawed) ones.

would i be able to feed him live ones??

Master_Joel Aug 05, 2004 07:37 PM

Nope, because they could have parasites. Freezing the crayfish kills off those things, and also live ones could pinch.

I feed my albig crawdads on occasion. (same as crawfish but with southern attitude)I know someone that breeds them, I don't catch my own. I pull off the pinchers and throw them in and watch Fluffy munch. I put the claws in a small bowl and Fluffy eats them too. My savs like the smaller ones, but then again an albig will eat anything.

There is no problem with feeding crayfish at all other than if you are buying them from a pet store as they can be expensive. There is no need to freeze them to prevent parasites either. while it is true that they can carry parasites, all prey items potentially carry parasites. I raise my own rats and mice and have for years and also know several large rat & mouse breeders (A large part of why I raise my own.) Nobody that I know of treats their rodents for parasites yet there are no signifigant problems with parisites from captive rodents. How do you treat crickets for parasite infestations? I have kept monitors for over ten years and fed them everything short of roadkill and have never had problems from parasites related to feeding. there is some old footage out there on one of those nature shows of a couple of monitors eating a dead sea turtle that is so rotten it is pretty much a blob of tar. These guys are really tough as far as food goes and live crawfish aren't going to hurt them. Do you eat sushi or raw oysters same potential for parasite infection yet not many people worry about it why should it be worse for your monitors.
