Big Baby

Our Egyptians just started hatching and as usual I am amazed at their size. This is an aegyptius (foreground) and his egg, next to a month old ocellata.

personable than frills. All frills do is hang on a branch all day. Very boring lizards. Get a uro you wont be sorry.

I'd have both! There's just something I love about agamids. I have a bearded dragon and mali uro, so a frilled would be cool, and maybe an aussie water dragon...a ball python would be nice, a trio of female leopard geckos, maybe a trio of female ornate uros, couple rankins dragons, maybe a black throat monitor, though those are going to be illegal to own in new york within the next year if something isn't done about the pending bill....

Needless to say, as a high school student, I don't have the money or time for all of that, and it wouldn't be a great idea either since I'm still just a high school student, but I can dream

Those are both great looking uros. They're such cute lizards, especially when first born. It makes me wonder why more people aren't breeding them. I guess it probably has a lot to do with suppy and demand and whatnot. I guess that's probably a good thing if you think about it. Look at the bearded dragon market and the leopard gecko market. They're both pretty much flooded right now. Granted, they both do make exceptionable pets as far as herps are concerned, it almost seems like soon there will be more of them available then there are people that are going to give them good homes.

Good luck with all of the reptiles. If I had the space, time, and money, I'd have a deposit down on a CB mali by now.

They are beautiful! I really wish you had an egyptian still available, I have been trying to find one for ages!

Congratulations with your new babies though!

I agree, those are some awesome looking Uro's. Cute little fellows, that's for sure.

Also, you're dead on about the BD market flood these days. I went to a herp show earlier this summer and the number of beardies for sale was amazing. It seemed like every other table had loads and loads of BD's for sale. Kinda makes you wonder about the quality of animals with all the mass production (breeding) going on these days.

Give me a quality bred BD or Uro any day compared to these fast-food style herp vendors.

Yeah, as far as the most popular reptile pets go these days (BD, leopard geckos, ball pythons, etc.) you have to be careful who you buy from. My bearded dragon was the first lizard I owned (I've had him for two years now) and I didn't choose as well as I should have, so we've been struggling through parasites and poor eating habits for the past two years. Luckily it looks like he's getting much better, with only one more treatment for his second infection of pinworms to go, and he's eating his veggies more than his crickets. But, next time I won't make that mistake. There are good quality breeders out there, it's a shame that you have to try hard to look for them though. I know this one local petstore near me...well, I don't like to support pet stores, but this one specializes in reptiles and exotic birds and they take great care of their animals...who else uses a 90 gallon tank to house baby beardies?. Anyways, I wish I had gotten my beardie from this store because the small local breeder that they get their BD's from is great. They are always very healthy, almost always eating greens and veggies when I come in, and they have great coloration. Another good thing is that, depending on the color variation available, prices usually range from $85-145...only occaisionally do they drop down to the standard $45 range. I see that as a good thing, because $20 reptiles of any sort are an invitation to bad keepers.

So I guess it's probably a good thing that uros aren't captive bred as often as other reptiles. I just hope that the other herps (BD's, leos, and BP's) have a good future...I'm hoping the market will correct itself after this big market flood we're going through right now. I mean, if a breeder doesn't sell off all of the offspring of a certain breed, they will stop producing them as much, right? I'm not really too keen on how that all works.
