NatashaG Aug 05, 2004 07:28 PM

My neighbor gave us her black rat snake and a week later told us that there were illegal in washington state. I called the local fish and wild life the zoo's and some local vets but all saild they didn't "do" reptiles so if anyone knows if there legal or knows were to find out I really need to know.

the Washington State F&W site discussing illegal exotics. I didn't see any mention of any reptiles. The site has more info and contact info (on the main F&W) webpage. But since obsoleta aren't native ot your state and it's not on the banned exotics, I think you don't have a problem (but check it out thoroughly with F&W first to make sure).

The only herps illegal in all of washington state are giant african clawed frogs and cane toads.. Everything else is fine. I don't know of any county laws either banning obsoleta either.. Whoever told her that needs to look into what she says before she says it. lol. I live in King County where pretty much everything short of non venomous colubrid are illegal. lol.

I think whoever told you that needs to find out for sure before saying that. It has never been known to be that black rat snakes are illegal here. All I know is what is on that list, and that native species cannot be kept captive, even if bought in another state.
