It was surrendered to Newark Humane society, unknown form where (they couldn't find records)and I take all their small snakes. OK, will look up water snakes, again. WHy do you say water? I am looking for features, but wsa leanign towards rats

It looks like a corn snake to me, especially in the second pic where there appears to be some of the checkerboard pattern on the belly. I certainly could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure that it is not a watersnake.
Cheers!

Nerodia of some sort. I could't tell you for sure which one, but that is no rat snake. Look at the picture P1010056.JPG
and there is absolutly no doubt about it being Nerodia.

looks like a northern to me.

Assuming it actually came from NH, it's a Northern Water Snake, Nerodia sipedon sipedon. If it's a transplant, then it's a cousin of the Northern.

Looks like Nerodia sipedon to me, kinda sorta resembles Nerodia fasciata just a little bit. However, I am gonna stick with sipedon.

It's clear that I need to lay off the root beer while trying to identify snakes over the internet. Thanks to all who pointed out an obvious mistake!
