TWO QUESTIONS FOR ANYONE!!????

BarryL Aug 05, 2004 07:49 PM

I have two totally different type questions for anyone.....

First one is......

Has anyone successfully bred, incubated and hatched out golden greek babies??? Any real proof????

Second question is.....

I know most folks say not to fertilize their yard if you have tortoises that graze on the grass. I can understand not to use pesticides, but why can't fertilizers be used?? (aka: Bandini 15-15-15) Afterall isn't it just phosphorus, Nitrogen, and potasium? As far as I know (which isn't much), these things aren't fatal unless eaten by the shovel fulls right??? Any hard evidence/proof of why this can't be used is very welcomed and appreciated.....

Thanks in advance!!
Barry

When I walk through my pens I see "fertilizer" everywhere. I'm wondering how 'hot' their droppings are. And I can surely see that weeds love that stuff. Does that count?

Your probably right. Their droppings I'm sure are great fertilizer. However, if you have a large grassy yard and you need to fertilize the whole thing, a couple of droppings here and there probably won't cut it. I'm just trying to find a good enough reason not to fertilize my yard and then water it real good so that the little white, grainy particles will just disolve into the ground......

Only folks I know of who have successfully bred Golden Greeks are Mike Lowe and David Lee of the Tortoise Reserve in White Lake, North Carolina. They had a number of hatchlings last summer.

Haven't heard from Darrell Senneke this year. He had a large "tribe" and should have had some luck this year.

You can reach Mike and David at TorResInc@aol.com

Good Luck!

Excellent!! Thank you!!

I think the idea is that fertilization will increase the protein content of the grass, to possibly dangerous levels. I just fertilize half of the yard/pen at a time, and have seen no problems.
