Anyone have plans............

crazydago18 Aug 05, 2004 10:46 PM

Next weekend i'm building a 8x4x3 cage for Slash(tegu). Just wondering if anyone has any simple fairly inexpensive but funtional plans for this project of mine. It has to look decent too. Its going in my living room. I plan on frame and plywood contruction with plobaly a sliding glass door on the entire front of the cage. What is the best kind of wood to use, to make sure it will hold up after years, and wont deterierate after being moist for a while, also if i cant find a sutable "water resistance" type wood what is a good coating a could use that wouldnt be harmfull to the tegu. Also would presure treated wood definatly not be a good idea. Thanks for and suggestions and/or advise greatly appreated, you guys and gals are great.

Presure treated wood has insectisides in it . I would not use presure treaded wood.

Hey I found that a basic box type design worked well for me. My cage is the same size as the one you want to build. I put mine up on a stand with shelves underneath it for storing my extra lightbulbs and stuff. I used 3/4 inch plywood and 2x4's for the frame. I also wired in a small space heater to a thermostat inside the tank. I used peg board for the top so that it has tons of ventilation it also made it very easy to mount lights. I have plexi sliding door all along the front with a simple 2" hole drilled to allow me to open it. I have asked my wife to take some pictures of it and email them to me so I can post them. Good luck. Also I sealed mine with a few coats of paint that I sprayed in. With the thick substrate I do not have a problem with them scratching the paint off. Again good luck.

I use PVC, available at home depot. it is white so it helps reflect UVB. it won't rot or smell it can be painted and is just great indoor or out.

outdoor pens
