Hello everyone, I'm a new member to this forum, but I'll probably be hanging around here for a while. Today I bought an aquarium and got two musk turtles. A common musk turtle and a razorback musk turtle, named Oscar and Dilberte. They are sitting in a 30 inch L 20 gallon right now and seem to be doing pretty good. I'll take some pictures of them later, but they aren't full grown, the common is about 2 inches and the razor back is about 3 inches long. This is the first time I've ever had an aquarium or even had turtles so I might be bugging you guys with a lot of stupid questions that you've already heard before. I'm making my best effort to do things right from the get go, so I don't have to worry about things going wrong down the road. I've got most of my aquarium set up, however I'm probably not nearly done yet. I've got a outside water filter, a couple of plants, and a few hiding places, but I plan to give them a lot more places to hide. I also bought some Mazuri turtle pellets today and hope that they start eating that, however they haven't touched it yet. Besides eating, my main concern right now is the heat source. Right now I have a 40 watt bulb from my lamp casting down on them, but I know I need I'm going to need to make it hotter than that. Today I bought a 75 watt terrarium lamp bulb, but silly me, I forgot that my lamp can only handle 60 watt bulbs at the max. Does anyone have any good suggestions on good viable heating sources? Would I almost be better off just getting a flourescent tube and hanging it on top of the screen? Also I'm just wondering, has anyone had any luck with these turtle pellets? I've heard Mazuri makes some good stuff so I'm hoping they'll eat it. The lady at the pet store said that on occassion you can feed turtles lettuce and strawberries as a treat, but I'm not sure if this would apply to musk turtles. Well guys, thanks for reading this, and hope to learn a lot from some of you more experienced members! I am willing to learn as much as I can.
Thanks,
Bob
